E-tolling legislation approved

To those who say that they won't pay:
Cabinet has already approved a bill last year that will allow government to take action in civil courts against people who dodge e-tolls.
This means that they can issue garnishee orders against your salary (they deduct e-tolls from your salary before you're paid) or attach your property for non payment.
However the courts will never keep up so I guess only a few examples will be made to try scare everyone into submission.

I'll just drive the clogged up back roads.
If I'm late for work, then my employer is going to have to make a plan (pay my e-tolls, let me work from home, more flexible working hours) because I can only flex so far before I resign and look for work elsewhere.

I'm glad this legislation is going through. It's time that the ANC see what the middle class really think of them.
Now just hurry up and start tolling please. The suspense is killing me.
 
Im not sure if people already know this, but a good number of municipal employee's claim AA rates(based on engine capacity) for travel from home to work and work to home. This means that they could also claim back their toll fee's. Now the goverment has "free" supporters for the etoll project.

Shall we assume the same applies to some politicians sitting at parliment?

Like what? The court system in South Africa is already maxed out. This is just going to place a heavier toll (No pun intended) on the court system.

If I'm not mistaken. We are looking at about 250,000 minimum summons' a month from just e-tolls. No court system can handle that!

The government seems to have this idea that the vast majority of South Africans have money laying around to spend on crap like this. Petrol goes up, tolls introduced = higher transport costs. Price of electricity increases which leads to higher overheads which in turn leads to more expensive products. It is a vicious cycle.
 
The reason they are so hell bent on getting their money making scheme going is that the plan is that this will start spreading like a cancer across the whole country. Gauteng is just the start, and once we all have our ankle-chains (a.k.a. E-Tag), the UV lighted wealth extraction points will start popping up all over the place.

AFAIK if you do not sign up and therefore do not accept the SANRAL E-Toll contract, the only way they can extract their extortion money is by sending you an invoice, not a summons. A summons can only be sent for traffic violations and not paying the E-Toll extortion fee is a civil matter.

However, the moment you get an E-Tag you agree to have them rape your bank account, and accept that they have the right henceforth to steal your money for using roads that your taxes have already paid for as they see fit.

Do not get an E-Tag. Ostracise anyone who does. Make it deeply uncool to be seen to be paying these monsters. Make it known that if anyone has a visible E-Tag in their vehicle it will be keyed.

Resist at all costs, because if we give in to this, much worse will come.

The way to twiddle government's tits is mass action. If I don't pay, and my friends don't pay, and their friends don't pay sorta thing. Yeah some of us will have to grow some balls to be able to look gov in the eye and tell it to **** off, but such is the way of resistance. Time to forget about a business/tax/citizen friendly government and man up against these criminals stealing & mismanaging our money.

First step and an easy one is do.not.get.an.e-tag! Roll over at the beginning and the battle is lost already. Then simply don't pay when you use the highways. If you're scared of the law, save your toll money in case you are caught so you can promptly pay if you're made an example.

Realise that this will not happen if you're not prepared to step out of your comfort zone, but it is the moral thing to do. Else get the lube and get used to bending over.

The idea is to make the project totally ungovernable, and we have the numbers to do so.
Send government the right signal, we will not pay for this!

Well, in a way they are. SANRAL's wet dream is a world where everyone requires an electronic permit to pay government a fee to travel anywhere. By SANRAL's own admission, these gantries are the thin edge of the wedge and they ultimately want to do a national roll out under the guise of the "user pays" principle.

BTW, the "user pays" principle is deeply flawed when it comes to infrastructure for the public good, especially when it is already being funded out of taxes, in which case it becomes the "user pays twice" principle.

We are getting taxed to death.

That's the anc's whole plan, but also their only plan. They are too moronic to stimulate the economy, or do anything clever that resembles the notion of a healthy government.
 
The entire system will fail within a few months or a year or two.

South Africans could just not be bothered with this.

Because of low employment rates. Not only are we missing taxed salaries from those unemployed, we are supporting them with aid from tax money.

SA's unemployment rate is unacceptable and I blame unions and hostile stance to capitalism in SA.
 
I noticed 5FM seems to support e-tolling. Every day at around 17:30 they play an ad from Sanral about all the places to get an e-tag.

I will use back roads and pay on the very last day before getting a summons. They will suffer to get my money and will NEVER get my bank details

You can't use back roads - that's stealing. If you use back roads, you are bypassing Multichoice's monopoly. If you can't afford DSTV, then just don't drive anywhere.

(Sorry, getting threads mixed up since the concepts are identical).


I will be forced onto back roads too. I have a daily consult in Midrand and that troll gate on the return section is the most expensive (cos they know it gets the most traffic). And since my hours are my own to call, I need not fight the morning congestion to use the back roads.

I wonder if Jstrike will get a tag.

As a public broadcaster they cannot refuse advertising airtime to any one company or government division. Sanral are paying for that prime-time slot. It doesn't mean that 5FM as a business endorse their product, service, business or message...
