Tried? Did the firmware upgrade complete successfully? Where did you get the firmware?

What kind of SIM do you have? How old is it?

Don't do that.

Try the firmware upgrade again, Download it again as well in case its the file that is corrupt.

Yeah I've seen this one about 3 times.
Dont worry yet.
Could just be a corrupt bit or 10 from the download.

Re-download the firmware (preferrably from Vodacom's site if you're unsure about these things).
Flash the modem again, remembering to first remove the sim before you flash.

If it fails, make sure to check the option to FORCE the overwriting of the modem's firmware.

And if all this still spooks you, take it in to a store and see if they won't deal with it for you.

thing is the modem is prob about 3 almost 4 years old so i doubt ill get any joy from a store

You probably took the SIM out for the upgrade and you may have damaged the SIM holder contacts.

The damage isn't usually irreversible, you usually just raise the contacts slightly and you should be back in action...

Access to them is not easy (don't try without opening the modem) you'll need a hair-dryer, sharp knife and a T5 Torq driver.

1. Heat the Vodafone or Huawei branding insert to soften glue.
2. When quite hot use the knife to lift off the logo trim.
3. Remove 1 x T5 screw and open modem.
4. Lift all six SIM contacts so they are very slightly higher - Less that 0.25mm
5. Reassemble and test.

I hope it works for you, it's a common problem....
