Hi,

I am having trouble with a e220 Huawei modem. All was fine for more than a year and then about a week ago it started with the following problem:

It keeps "rebooting" itself. Once the modem is plugged-in it asks for the sim pin and once it is connected on the network it disconnects and reboots the modem and the VMC lite software.

I have connected the modem on my laptop to eliminate that the problem is on software on our desktop. Same problem on my laptop. I have updated the firmware but that hasn't changed anything.

In my opinion it has to be the modem not the VMC software because I got the same result on my laptop. What I don't understand is why the firware update didn't help.

Please help!?!?!

And thanks in advance!

I've seen this a few times, and my modem does the same. It usually happens when theres very bad signal. What fixes it is a firmware upgrade, but thats just temporary.

I would suggest taking it in to VodaCare and have them swop it out for you.

Thanks Iam3G, I was hoping for another option. But if that is the solution so be it. My one question is why has it worked for the last year, same spot, same desktop, same everything...and all of a sudden it stops.

If anyone has another idea, I am still open for suggestions.

Thanks again, for the prompt response.

Why does your car start giving problems after a few years of driving it?

Lame answer, you can't possibly compare a car with 100's of moving parts, to a wireless PC device with zero moving parts.

I also have the same problem, but I think it's cos I'm just on the edge of a cell. Upgraded firmware and using Huawei Mobile Connect, still happens.

Signal is weakest during foul weather eg. very windy or rain.

The parts may not be moving, but the parts performing functions. Like say for example the transmitters that are transmitting, and the LED that is shinning. IMO, in that context, in can be compared to a car.

Ja i agree, it could be becoz you are at the edge of a cell, but what should happen is that you should jump to the next best available connection, this being 2G(GPRS). What happens to our modems is that it completely stops functioning.

Yes, mine does exactly that, drops down to 3G, then GPRS, then disconnects. It's frustrating, to say the least.

Are you able to get it to start up again when yours disconnects? In other words, can you restart the dashboard and connect again?

Yes, but only after shutting down the MC software and starting it up again. Sometimes it takes up to 5min to detect the network.

Casual browsing I don't mind getting disconnected, but sucks if I'm in the middle of a DotA game.

That's what i've got it set on. Still doesn't sort out the disconnects.

I've heard getting an unrestricted APN, a sort of dedicated "line" will improve connection stability. Any idea on how to go about getting one?

That's not going to help you. unrestricted APN simply allows inbound connections to you, which are firewalled on the internet APN.

Now what happens to mine(and e200-Vodacom's it appears) is that it doesnt start back up again. Well, it does, but as soon as it finds and connects to the network it 'reboots' again.

Only way i can get it working is when i do the firmware again.

What i have found is that it only happens when it goes to 2G. How i know this is when i took my modem and set it to 2G Only. It immediately rebooted. i had to do the firmware again. When i took my colleagues modem, set it to 2G Only, and it still kept on working.

i suspect mine is a signal problem, I can use it in an area where the signal is strong, without a problem. Just my bad luck i live on the edge of a cell.

Iam3G, do you have Huawei firmware and software, or just the software. Your problem sounds the same as the trouble I had with the Vodafone firmware. Which is why I flashed with Huawei firmware.

I doubt its a problem with the Vodafone Firmware, as my colleague has the exact same firmware version, 11.110.05.00.00, and his works fine.

Like i said, it happens as soon as it attaches to GPRS.

And ja, i do use the Vodafone Firmware and Software.

@porn$tar, as morkhans posted, you do not need the unrestricted APN, the information you received was incorrect.
