I'm getting a lot of error 631 since I started using a E272 over the weekend. This doesn't happen while traffic is going through the link (up or down). Once it happens I am unable to connect again for between 30 second and 5 minutes as it comes back with error 619 all the time. Restarting VMC or rebooting doesn't resolve the issue.

It normally happens once or twice during the day but more frequently (every 20 to 60 minutes) between 17:00 and 23:00.

I'm in Montana, Pretoria. External high gain antenna pointed to the Montana tower which is about 3Km from me and happens to be the closest tower.

Any ideas what is causing the 631 errors? I know the 619 errors normally happen when the network is overloaded or there is some problem with the authentication on the network.

Don't know about 631 [it is a Windoze error number], but 619 also happens on pre-paid when there is no credit available [e.g. after a PPDB has been depleted].

Since I've posted this I haven't had one 631 error... Strange how things are...

It is a prepaid SIM but the balance is around R 70. It happens whether there is 15MB or 2GB available on the bundle.

Apparently 631 is supposed to happen when the user disconnects the connection unexpectedly (i.e. remove the USB device). I don't do this. Some reports on the web indicate that it is Windows power saving causing the problem (i.e. current to the device drops below a threshold which effectively switches the device off) and suggest disabling power saving on the port.

Could well be.

Also, a lot of disconnects with these USB modems seem to be related to the USB modem not getting enough power form the PC's USB port and then shutting down.

Huawei supplies a double USB-plug cable to try and get more power to the modem. Have you tried this?

Some people have gone to the effort to make a special USB cable with capacitors in it to resolve this problem.

So maybe try and work around getting more power to the modem and see if it helps.

Hi we have 2 of the new 3g cards, that gives the same error 631, the card connects and then as soon as you open outlook or internet. It comes up with this 631 error or a 619 error do you have any ideas on what may be the problem. The vodacom tech says it is a melware problem. But we have tried this on another PC it still does the same.
Can you help?

It does sound a bit like a power issue, if you have E272's, try using the double USB cable to supply more current to the modem.
Otherwise, since you say "new", are you sure your SIM cards are configured for data and have sufficient aritime? (Try putting one of them in a phone and browsing)

Maybe the melware spread to the other PC?

How different are the two PCs? If your PC is unable to deliver enough current to the modem you'll have to try a completely different PC or laptop to confirm this.
