Early upgrade contract query

Hi.

I have the option to upgrade now but I just want to confirm something.. Apologies if it is a stupid question.

If I upgrade at month 22 and renew the contract will it be another 24 months added to the current contract (so in effect will be 26 months before I cancel) or will it be 24 months from the date that I renewed.

If it is the former isn't this a problem over the long term?
For example:

Get contract in Jan 2004
Upgrade in Sept 2006 (3m early)
When would they allow to upgrade again? Only 27 months later?

You can upgrade after 22 (or sometimes 20) months after extending your contract. Your contract will only expire after 24 months though. So, for example, if you upgrade after the first 22 months you'll be able to upgrade again in month 44 although your contract only expires after month 48. Your next upgrade will be in month 66 with contract expiration after month 72, and so on.

Yes.

If you upgrade at 22 months they still have your ass for the next 26 months. There were threads here some time ago. You are held liable for your entire contract duration.

Many thanks.. this is exactly the info I was looking for. So I one upgrades early every time for a few cycles you can end up getting a phone and then being bound to them for another 30m or more.
 
It also used to be that you needed to let them know a month in advance if you were going to cancel your contract. Not sure if that still stands with the CPA in place.
 
I just went to observatory MTN and according the (seeming) knowledgeable sales person it is no longer like that.
Say for instance month 22 is September, If I renew in September it will be 24 months from then. Ie contract end September 2014.

She was 100% certain about this.

I could be wrong...but if that is the case....the contract will keep on getting shorter and shorter not so?
 
I got the same response from MTN and this is what is confirmed on their website - buried several layers deep somewhere on MTN Active. It only came into effect after the introduction of the CPA.

No.. just that contracts can be ended on month 21 if you take another contract with them.
 
I can confirm that if you take the upgrade on month 21 the remaining 3 months are cancelled (free) and a new 24m contract is opened. Just got a S3 and last payment is 30/08/2014 :)
 
Interesting..

I wonder if the same applies if you can upgrade 5 months early...

(that's what I could do, I rather waited.)

No... they told me month 21. They mentioned something about CPA.
