Hi guys,

So I'm busy building a place and have bought some Cat6 shielded cable for the network throughout. Can anyone here tell me more about having to earth the cables? Will I need to earth each cable individually? Can I just earth one that is connected to the switch and that will sort it out?

Also, where can I find wall plugs that have a network jack in them? (lets say 2 normal 3 point plugs and a network spot in the middle?

I'd appreciate any help I can get

You need to use FTP connectors instead of UTP connectors on the shielded cable. The device you plug them into is supposed to be earthed. Also, try and keep your power and network plugs away from each other, so don't put that network point in between 2 power plugs. Separate wall boxes and conduits.

You can get the outlets from Space TV.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately it runs in the same conduit, that's why I decided on the shielded rather.
Space TV main site got some AV popup when I tried to access it... Will try the products page then rather.

So there is no need in earthing the cable? Only all the units plugged in? This will be PCs, HTPC, receiver etc

The industry I was in (I am retired) maintained that network cables shield to be earthed at one end only. If both ends then harmonics or something bad could happen.

Should every cable be earthed then through the device?

I would say yes but maybe the plug does that. The cable will be plugged into a router or switch.

Ok so the cat6 shielded runs in the wall, to the wall plug on 1 side, and the switch on the other side.
Then there is a cable from the plug, to the PC, HTPC, switch or whatever.

Now, should the wall plugs have those metal connectors in them? Cause I can't seem to find these online for a wall plate.
Also, should I earth each cable in the wall? Isn't every device earth automatically, like my PC? Should I get a special switch?

As far as I am aware you are not allowed to run other cables with power cables.

If you are building, put in extra conduits for communications.

Your completion certificate could be refused if you have mixed use conduits.

When I built, I put in a communication conduit in each room. I used Clipsal parts as previously suggested.

+1. Even a port for your TV aerial / DSTV, has to be run in a seperate conduit pipe.

Mmmm, well the guy building the place said he is going to do this? Hopefully he knows that this will not be signed of?
Any tips on the earthing questions I asked above?

SANS 10142 6.1.10 - Conductors that form part of a d.c. installation shall not be run in the same wireway as conductors that form part of an a.c. installation.

Confirmed that it's not in the same conduits. How about earthing now?
