Hi Folks

My mom is old and frail and her mind is also not what it used to be, very easily confused.
She mucked up her phone old Nokia 6230 and I need to replace it with something as I cant find another identical one o replace it with.

Any input from users on a bog standard easy phone to use for the elderly. It really does not need any bells and whistles, just calls and sms.

Big buttons and clear screen, bigger the better.

We tried in the past to get her onto BB and other smartphones but that was impossible even then, so something really simple and easy is required.

Thanks.

Go check out a pep cell store.

They usually have older style nokias available.

If money isn't a huge factor, get her an Android phone with a nice big screen and install the BIG Launcher from the Play Store. It's outstanding for the technologically impaired. You can find brand new S3's and S4's for R3-4k on Gumtree.

My 85 year old grandmother is using this and she loves it, sends SMS messages and everything without a problem.

Even the website shows off elderly people with the phone.

Does it add a massive keyboard? Otherwise I don't see it working very well.

There are 3 phones at VC for 499. Same as ZTE.
Mr Google knows.
IE Alcatel 2000

What works well is one of the cheaper Nokia Lumias with WP.

To make it really easy to navigate, have only 3 full-size tiles on the home screen, for say Phone, Contacts, and Messages. Basic nav education is easy - to get Home at any time, press the Win button at bottom middle.

ZTE-G S306 From Vodacom at Vodaworld. Big buttons and speaks numbers pressed. Also has a torch.

MIL aged 87 has no problems using it.

Thanks for all the feedback folks, this will help a lot.

:)

My 88 year old mother uses a Nokia Asha 300.

A basic telephone keyboard was a necessity as she doesn't always remember how to operate a touchscreen.
A camera was a must when selecting the phone, as she takes photos of her grand children, garden and anything she finds interesting.
I put in a 16Gig micro SD, so that she can snap away to her heart's content, and I download all the pics to my PC or laptop when we see her about twice a year.

We take cellphones for granted, but for the elderly it is a fairly new invention that came out when they were in their 60's.
Try asking them how to program a DVD player, and you will see that blank look. Cellular technology is the same.

My dad also needed a phone with physical buttons. I went to a Autopage store and got him one of the Nokia phones they had. Autopage keep a lot of mid range phones which still have physical buttons on them. You can buy them for cash instead of getting them on a contract. They also beat the price if its cheaper in one of the other stores.

I am on this search mission now, most of the phones available mentioned here aren't sold anymore.

Any new suggestions?

I'd go for a simple android phone and download a launcher (I think it's big launcher?) - just Google big launcher and something should come up

Do Samsungs still come with their simple launcher? You can toggle between the standard homescreen and a greatly simplified and streamlined version designed to just expose the phone's core functions, but I don't know whether it still exists in the latest models.

They do in the last ones I've had

Well that's what I would get then, one of the entry level or just above phones, so something like the A3.

I got my dad the S3 Mini for the same reason 2 years ago but he was insulted and wanted the proper Android home screen. Can use the phone fine for basic things. Especially now that I got him a stylus.
