Hi Guys

My boss wants me to setup an SMTP server but I do not have any experience with mail servers or linux...We will use a 3rd party mail host for the incoming pop3 but he wants our own outgoing server....

He said that he wants spam assassin and amavis....

What else would you guys recommend?

You say you don't have experience with Linux or mail servers? Good luck....

Unfortunately, I have the Linux experience, but not mail servers, so I can't really help here. I would recommend getting the experts in to help set it up at the very least, otherwise you will end up getting hacked and/or used as a spam relay. Although, possibly not if your POP server is hosted somewhere else.

You could also try Mercury, made by the some people who did Pegasus Mail. Mercury was last updated in July 2008, the mail client hasn't been in awhile. http://www.pmail.com/. Although, not sure if it's available for Linux.

I had a look at postfix and it looks quite powerful but slightly complicated for me :D

How much would an expert charge to setup a mail server?

Postfix... It's a matter of installing it, and it'll mostly be working... Then just to tweak to your needs.

Does it come with most ports closed, to prevent unauthorized relaying and so forth?. I think I will also download it, and give it a go. I would be running it on Gentoo, where our mail server currently hangs out.

So thanks for the help

Default install on most distros come with only port 25 listening, and relay allowed only from localhost. Gentoo has their own ideas about everything, so I can't comment on their default setup.

Anyway, install it, then run 'postconf -n' and post the output here. I'll tell you what you need.
