East London - Wireless Mesh

Is there a wireless network in east london, specifically the beacon bay area

there is one running, but we don't play with the silly 2.4 range,we play with the 5 range, gets better reception over large distances, currently we cover beacon bay(the lower part by bimbos to the country club)berea and se are soon moving into the more vincent-selborne area.

Hi pixie

how do we get access to this wireless network. What equipment would we need.

I have a couple of guys that are keen in the beacon bay area.

Wow bradshs regged since 2005 and 1 post? eek!
Im not sure which network that is running along that side. I moved to Gonubie so I havnt been involved for a while.
From what I can tell its a 5GHZ based network so you would need a 802.11a compatible hardware setup. Microtik or even the newer ubiquity stuff works quite nicely for that.
Just with the shape of the land I dont know if the lower BB area will extend to the upper areas too.

I am looking for wireless in Kingfisher street - Beacon bay - can you help?

Hey guys,
We are starting/have started a wireless mesh network in East London,
We currently have 6 nodes and are covering a fair area.
If anybody is interested in joining then please let me know as we want to get this running and the more the merrier!

Either post or PM me if you are keen and i can let you know what you would need equipment wise and we can also test to see if you have signal.

We are also able to see certain parts of Gonubie

I'm quite keen. I am in Beacon Bay Valley (bowling club side) and obviously would like to know if I can get signal (big trees around) before I buy the kit. How do I go about that?

Apathy from East London? NEVER! :D

K T - I know there are several wireless meshes going on around town but none of them are officially maintained or anything like that. I think it's more or less pot luck at the moment.

Oooooh, interesting! Im another Beacon Bay chap. Im close to beaconhurst drive in Pell street. :)

Myself and another 2 colleagues at work all live in Beacon Bay. We were chatting about connecting our houses for gaming purposes. Was looking around and found this thread.
Is this network still up? Is so, how do we go about gaining access?

Hi barkei,
With the changes in broadband over time the network has pretty much fizzled out and is not in use anymore.
You should take a look at the uncapped LTE that Telkom is offering, there is signal coverage in Gonubie for it and its a lot faster than the ADSL there.
