East London - Wireless Mesh

can someone please explain this mesh, im bit of a noob

Its like a city wide network over wireless technology, to put it plain and simple

antenna + AP + PC + ladder to get onto your roof + parents permission to mount said hardware onto their roof

you could get away with about R800 worth of gear...

... oh, and then you need somewhere to point it to :/

I'm keen...

I'm in the Selborne/Vincent area...would we have coverage there? Also what are the setup costs?

Selborne/Vincent should be no problem, depending on line of sight.
We are busy working with a local supplier to sort out a pre packaged and lightly configured kit so I will let you know as soon as we know.

Is this the wsb crowd?

I feel VERY insulted, this is a non-profit community based network.
Having said that i understand how you could get it confused considering there are a few of their AP's around when I do scans.

No insult intended, it was merely a question.

I have one of their aerials on top of my roof. Needless to say I have a free 7gb account.

How would your mess work and what are the benefits. Would it basically be sharing info between PC's like a local LAN?

Would you be able to stream over the network and don't you have to have a specific wireless spectrum allocated to you?

Is there access in the Gonubie area?

Too many questions.

Cheers

Never too many questions! Thats what i hate about the internet, you can never tell the tone that people say things in! what i meant to say is "I feel VERY insulted :D" i was only kidding!

We are using the 2.4 spectrum at the moment which has many grey areas etc.

It functions as a normal LAN which will have streaming capabilites and pretty much everythign else a wired LAN would. Its a nice way to share data and for LAN gaming etc.
Its also alot of fun setting things up.

Right so if you are in Gonubie and have a tower on your roof then im guessing that makes you up near the power station in Gullsway road?
You have LOS to one of our highsites if that is the case.

If that indeed is you then we need to chat!!!!

Nope, I live in Nahoon atm at the Castle, but will be moving to Gonubie sometime next year. I own Caravans R Us in Gonubie so if you want to chat, give me a shout.

Oops, my name is Gareth in case you want to drop me line. Pretty pointless popping in or phoning and asking for getafix33. No one will know what you're talking about.

Cheers

Yeah im also moving there next year, in Beacon bay at the moment.
Im planning on extending it to Gunobie to get comms there.
Still need to work out some logistics but im pretty sure it will work!
Will let you know what i can organise. Do you know where in Gonubie you will be?

Right on the outskirts near the N2. I will literally be in walking distance to work, like 300m. There is a housing development going up at Highway Community Church (yip the dudes with the fireworks not so long ago) and we are building there.

Well there seems to be some more interest sparking which is fantastic, a new highsite is being planned at the moment and should be good for linking two meshes that were battling to connect before.

There we go! Progress! Feels good don't it? I remember my first "merging of the meshes" like it was yesterday! :D

It does feel good!
Cant wait for the day that we get all of the countries meshes linked!

Hi Roland, there are some wireless providers in EL, Aerosat provides services and I think there are one or two other small ones.

But.... take a read through the wireless forums and see if you can find anyone who is happy with and of the wireless providers, you most likely wont find any.

They are generally a waste of time and dont work out any cheaper than getting yourself an ADSL line or even a 3G offering from Vodacom or MTN - Cell C and Virgin only do EDGE which is so horribly slow that you might as well be using dial up.

Are you in Butterworth mostly or EL?
