Pretoria - A 46 percent decline was recorded in this year's Easter road fatalities, compared to 2015, South African Transport Minister Dipuo Peters said on Tuesday.

“The report we are presenting this morning is preliminary and statistics will be compared to the report of last year. This report entails figures from Thursday, March 24, to Monday, March 28, 2016,” Peters told reporters in Pretoria. “The report indicates that there were 156 fatalities on the roads this year, compared to 287 fatalities for the same period last year. This presents a much welcomed 46 percent decline.”

Yeah, still too high but I'd also suggest that 'ol Dipuo has been helped out by economics. So many folk I know who usually take an Easter break away stayed home this year. Less traffic... Just saying.

46% less people could afford to go on holiday

Too right. Early Easter. People have barely recovered from Christmas spending. Fewer people on the road without a doubt.

That is a massive drop (and quite surprising considering that behaviour on the roads hasn't really changed much from my experience). What would be really surprising though would be if the DoT and all the traffic orrifi around the country had even a tiny clue as to why this would be the case

Probably because no-one could afford to go away this year. I presume the "cars-on-the-road vs. deaths ratio is still the same.

Nobody I know(except my boss) went away for easter.

There weren't many cars on the road. I've witnessed N4 reduced to a parking lot in the past. It wasn't the case this year.

Anyone with traffic stats on the N4?

The N1 in Limpopo was apparently a parking lot as usual with pilgrims headed for Moria, and that with the road improvements to control traffic in and out of Moria/ZCC.

Behavior on the N3 was a lot better than in previous years. Heavy traffic but free flowing. I think the average speed enforcement is making a difference

Average speed enforcement is making a difference, but the volume of holiday-goers was quite steeply down this year from what I could see....

That 46% drop will only be impressive if the volume of road users was the same (roughly) as last year.

Alot of people i know left the weekend of the 20th March already and did the 10 day holiday thing. So chances are there was a 46% increase in accidents in the weekend before easter.

Plus alot of them then returned in the middle of easter weekend (as opposed to the end of it) . So traffic was alot more spread out across the whole week methinks.

So i already see a flaw with the stats, previous easters didn't coincide with the 21st March holiday.

You'll probably find it's the same amount of accidents just with less deaths per accident due to less cars on the road.

Where I live is notorious for C*nt drivers through the area, overtaking on a blind rise, double white line with no shoulders, over chevrons for turning cars, past a line of cars behind a truck.

So yeah, simply less cars to drive into.

Fuel price pretty high given oil price (thank you taxes) so yah this should be having an effect on an already stressed consumer.

Lies, damned lies and statistics...taylored to make things look good.
