I would have laughed if some noob thought there were valuables in the case and ran off with it, only for there to be a poooof, and a smoke cloud in the distance.... hahaha

This also explains why people were asking if there were police at Bedford Center when walked back blissfully unaware.
 
But there are always cops at the KFC at Bedford Center. So :p quick response should be easy.
 
Heard on 702 now, the bomb was close to two restaurants that use gas. Could have blown half of Eastgate.

Well there WAS a scare at greenstone mall, but they didnt find anything. And it was a looooong time ago.

Bomb squad says it it the real mccoy... but maybe there is miscommunication somewhere. I understand EASTGATE's management's fear of losing paying customers over this... So they will obviously err on the side of this being a hoax. The police however say otherwise currently.
 
There is an active bomb search at a KFC in Bedfordview afaik... RIGHT NOW!!!
 
Device was placed to caused maximum damage... Under busy escalator near the only two shops who run completely off of gas for food preperation. According to 702 report... It was aparently a very professional bombing attempt.
 
Wonder who its ganna turn out to be. The far right or the far left. My money is either some right wing group or malema supporting commie. It sounds very organized which makes me more inclined to think its right. Too smart for those commies.

Surely they must have a ton of cctv footage on this perp? Its in a mall.

I'll wait until the forensics report comes back when they have analysed the fragments ;)

My guess is still that it was a hoax.

702 have just stated that it was a real bomb and that it was placed under the escalator at the cinemas and that it was a professional device positioned to cause maximum damage.

Police sources believe that the Eastgate Shopping Centre bomb was a premeditated crime that could have caused major damage.

On Monday afternoon, staff and shoppers were evacuated from the Johannesburg mall when tenants discovered a case and raised the alarm.

Ekurhuleni metro police officers, police and the Bomb Disposal Unit were called to the scene.

The bomb squad confirmed that they conducted a controlled blast on the explosive device.

Eyewitness News understands that the suitcase was found beneath the escalator at the food court of the mall.

The bomb was planted near the only two restaurants that operate on gas.

Sorry, but how can they tell from just the fragments? They can at best only guess outside of lab conditions.

Anyway, why would someone (esp. the suspect) phone them and tell them where the bomb was?

ROFL!!! I have tried to use shopping mall CCTV footage for finding a criminal before... They basically have it to protect their property... Face ID is a long shot at best!!!! Except for MAKRO... Their systems are VERY good!

The 702 news thingy stated that a suspicious bag aroused the curiosity of shoppers and then the attention of staff. The police disarmed the bomb in a controlled explosion outside... there was no mention of any call or anything. The position of the device indicates it was placed for large scale destruction had it detonated.

Investigations are still underway, they say. Obvious I would think.

EDIT: A letter warned the jewellery store of the device it would seem, depending which radio station you listen to. Will have to wait and see what the newspapers say.
