Anyone know of an easy path to upgrade from the HD PVR to the Explora decoder without losing the content on the HD PVR. The reason, I have loads of content still to be watched and more added weekly.

One idea I had was to switch to the Explora as primary and put the HD PVR as a secondary via XtraView until the content is all watched on the HD PVR. But I'm not sure what will happen when I switch on XtraView and what is required - both decoders will be connected to the same TV right next to each other.

I've tried contacting MultiChoice but alas the support staff I've been in contact with lack the comprehension skills required to answer my questions.

I know there must be a fundi here that will know.

That shouldn't be a problem at all. The multiswitch which comes with the Explora is sufficient to connect both the Explora and the HD-PVR to :)

It should work without any issues, just plug each into a different HDMI port and you're set.

But surely then I'd be paying 2 subscription fees? Or will the content on the HD PVR still be accessible for playback once the Explora smart card is activated?

No you won't. You'll just pay extra for the Extra View (I think its 70 bucks or something). The content will independently be available on each device

So all I need to do is plug both decoders into the multi-switch and tell MC to enable XtraView? No heartbeat cable?

Also, does the fact that I reside in a complex with a single cable installation affect it? I have all channels mapped to vertical polarity and manually program in about 11 networks. I know for the Explora I can connect directly to the single wall jack and it works with the programmed networks so I normally don't need the multi-switch.

Contact "Quantum Theory" (send him a PM), he does this for a living and will be able to help you with your more technical questions

As requested.

Use a 3-way satellite splitter (950-2150MHz) and not a multiswitch. Run 2 outputs into the old HD and 1 into the Explora. You may need a line amplifier, depending on signal strength in your unit.

HD PVR Settings
Explora Settings

Set up heartbeat link between the decoders and call MC to activate.

Thanks. If I'm not mistaken my unit signal strength is great as they had to fix/replace the cable when I got the Explora and it moaned about the signal. I got it to work OK on its own.

I'm confused why the HD PVR would need two inputs when currently I'm using only one on the HD PVR.

What cabling do I need for the heartbeat link?
