Eating with a knife and fork

...
I also use my fork to cut things and it annoys my wife no end, I don't see the problem. :D

Why get annoyed about that?

I burp loudly after supper (it is actually the beer) and my wife complains about that.

From eating in front of the tv, where you need one hand to hold the plate and the other to eat ;)

I think this is also the reason why I never really learned as a youngster. I used to love TV or playing on the PC with my plate next to the keyboard :)

Very rarely have we set next to a dinner table for dinner - perhaps I should also mention that I spent 90 percent of my days at my grandparents' place (mainly because my parents were both working and I only saw them weekends) and they didn't have a dining area :)

Not much culture in these posts. Eating with your hands is ok for a braai, but not at the table, or even a tray on your lap, unless its a sandwich

I want to enjoy my food, not get annoyed while struggling to cut a hamburger, or having to keep on catching my plate, because it refuse to stay on my lap.

If you don't like the way I eat, don't visit me.

Do you eat a hamburger or hotdog with a knife and fork? bwahahaha

If in a restaurant or in company then yes. When alone...I basically just sallow it whole.

Things like braai tjoppies, sossaties et, that finger food really. If I had to see someone close to me in a restaurant grabbing their schitzel or whatever with their hands, that would put me off my food. But that is just me.

Nothing wrong with eating a hamburger with your hands. I personally will eat it with knife and fork if I am with someone....but I would not mind if someone else used their hands. That is how a burger is supposed to consumed I think :)

When people start grabbing rice and steak and that kind of things with their hands....that to me would be a no no.

Depending on the company, I will also use a knife and fork. I'm not that uncivilised :o

When I find a tough steak on my plate I'm like f*** the fork and tear it with my bear hands.

At home I usually just use a fork, when at another person's home I look at the food, if I could eat it with just a fork then I do, if I would need to use a knife for any reason such as cutting a piece of meat then I use both.

So it depends on the situation.

If however I'm at any sort of restaurant then it depends on the place itself. A place like Spur I would have no problems eating a burger with my hands or cutting the ribs and then eating it with my hands (How else?). At a more formal place though I would avoid ordering something that would be difficult to eat with a knife and fork.

^ This. I'm indian and quite a few of our traditional meals are eaten by hand. Roti in the left hand, tear off piece of roti and use that to "mop" up a bit of curry to chow. This is not as messy as some might think, as you are using the roti (flatbread) as a utensil, in a way.

However, when I am at a fancy restaurant, I am able to handle my knife and fork like a pro :) But I will not order any "admin" food that requires a lot of "prep" work eg prawns, ribs, bony chicken etc

It always depends. Eat with the Chinese/Japanese/Korean/etc, use chopsticks. Eat with the indians/middle eastern, use your hand (for those who don't know, the vast majority clean their hands meticulously before using them. There is a basin literally two meters away from the dining table specifically for hand washing. Naturally spoons are used for soups, etc. If eaten correctly, depending on the type of food, only the finger tips are ever stained from food.). Eat with the westerners...well that further depends on the social class :p. Seven course meal with all the required proper etiquette, using the knife and fork together would be the least of your problems. Eat with the hillbillies, USE THEM BEAR HANDS! :D

Personal choice in private any thing goes .... public if you don't mind spearing unsophisticated eat as you like ..but some people really look gross when they stuff their mouths with food and try to chew and cant close their moth while they are eating ...ewwwww

I looooove prawns and many times had them in a fancy restaurant. The first time I was a little shy, but then decided stuff that, I like what I like, and since I was not the one paying, I ordered. I did remember to not drink Black Label straight out of the can, though.
