I hate it.

Grew up in a small town so was never needed for me to eat with a knife and fork when we went out as all the places were quite relaxed.

At varsity I had to learn (stayed on campus) and I still didn't enjoy it.

I don't see why I should be required to do so if I am not comfy with it, especially since I have a really clumsy left hand.

Opinions?

edit: I don't mean not using cutlery at all, I mean using only a fork when I eat

Are you Indian? just curious..

side-note: if you want to eat with your hands only, that's fine, but remember to wash and at least eat neatly. ;)

Something bothers me a bit about eating with ones hands. This dude at work tells me that is the only way to eat curry, fine that is your way. BUT!...!! I have seen MANY people at work go to the bathroom, do their business and not wash their hands when they exit. Would you share a bowl of food with them, using their hands? No, I certainly would not.

No, I'm not indian

What I meant is I enjoy eating with a fork only, not with my hands

I know quite a number of Moslem people here in Cape Town and up in Jozi who eat with their hands. My uncle in Jozi doesn't even have any forks in their house.

In my opinion it is acceptable to eat without cutlery at a place like Spur, but not at a formal restaurant.

Yoh! Ok, that's completely different dude... edit OP and say you eat with fork only.... :P

But still, whatever floats your boat... ;)

well I would actually gage the situation before going hands in ... even though it is more
enjoyable sometimes, using a fork only should not be an issue at all but in ultra formal
situations fork and knife and like MickeyD said swap em, thats what I normally do still
a bit uncomfy but works!

I only use a knife when I really HAVE to, rest of the time only a fork.

how do you eat a bunny with a fork and knife or even a pizza or hamburger
i always eat with my hands how would i hold the fork and knife if i did not

I recommend learning how to use cutlery correctly. If you want to be a bona-fide member of a western society, then this is akin to learning to read and write, brushing your teeth, taking pride in your appearance and while not conforming exactly to the norms of society, at least go some way to appearing as if you do.

One day in the future you may be invited to give a speech or a talk, part of which will be a dinner and you may be amongst your peers, maybe you are representing your business, your employer or the country. Proper table manners and conduct will be expected of you and taken for granted.

Boerie, spare-ribs, chicken wings/drums/etc, lobster, prawns, hamburger, pizza slices, snacks, sosaties, fresh fruits, sarmies... most of the time I also eat with my hands.

Same here, however sometimes I use the side of my fork to cut some food

From eating in front of the tv, where you need one hand to hold the plate and the other to eat ;)
I also use my fork to cut things and it annoys my wife no end, I don't see the problem. :D
