Ebook reader - Cheapest

That does look fine, but then I would still rather get the netbook for R1500ish as that has a couple of more options and im sure it can run a couple more applications :)

Well yea, that specific item is an imported item anyway, that's why i'm saying you can probably get the exact same thing for alot cheaper locally.

Ok let me put it to you this way... If I could get a laptop that can do this for R500 (I dont care how old it is) i will buy it as I am sure I can update its software with all kind of document readers ;)

Price is nr 1 on my list while it being handheld vs putting it down on my lap / bed is the last of my worries :) I must only be able to take it with me.

You will find over the long term that the form of a netbook will irritate you - especially if you read a lot. Diabolus is right on the money.

I highly doubt it, I do read a lot and most of it in my bed, also read from a computer screen does not bother me(I have read about 11000 pages worth of books from my pc in the last year) the mobility is my biggest worry and I don't even mind carrying a laptop sized bag with me :)

Thanks for the help and suggestions thus far guys!

Maybe look into something like this:

That's R1400 , but i'm sure you can get the same type of thing cheaper somewhere....doesn't have to be that exact item..it's the idea ;).

Hell even this R900 PHOTO FRAME is something worth investigating [it can actually play txt format ebooks]:

You can get away with alot of cheap devices if you're willing to convert all your ebooks into images [you get software for that]. Then anything that can display a slideshow is good to go ;).

Yeah that might not be a bad idea :)

Like I said price is the main factor.

In that case let me know about the zodiac and I might be interested in it, possibly. I'd have a bit of a hard time justifying another expense right now though but I would use a reader. The zodiac has a huge user community and emulator support as well so great for mobile gaming. I could get a lot of use out of this.

Will do. They seller pmed me and told me he is waiting for the best offer :)

So ill offer to pay R100 and you trump me with R150 :p

Doesn't he even have a ballpark to start off with? That is very annoying.

Actually looking at the Palm Tapwave which Cerebus posted, i just remembered what is ideal [with a little tinkering]:

Nintendo DS Lite
or
Playstation PSP

The DS even have a 2 page layout [2 screens] ...PSP got a bigger screen though.

But yea, if you're going the "i want it cheap" AND "but it must make coffee too " route , then a laptop is your best bet. However then i wouldn't bother aiming low, get a R5k tablet-laptop with a touchscreen and be done with it.

Aye, asked him to give a rough figure. No response yet :)

Lol, no not coffe maybe serve beer though :p

Like I said if I can pick up a ds lite or psp for cheap second hand I will take it :)

How would you go about modding a psp to read ebooks? For me I'd need a proper OS on it - Palm, Symbian or Winmo preferably.

Well, i don't have a PSP personally, but aparantly the easiest is to convert your ebooks to HTML , copy it to the right place and view in your PSP browser...don't even need to mod anything.

On the DS it's basically getting the right homebrew software OR using the DS Browser.

I would need to have an OS to be honest. I mainly use Isilo and the format is proprietary.

I see he wants R750 for it. That is a fair price IMO for the amount of functionality you'd be getting. I've seen much lower specced PDAs going for R1k+.

The guy selling the Zodiac says he will sell it pref. for R850 but would 10-1 take R750.

Think i will sleep on it a bit :p

Until we get a kindle that works in SA I'm sticking with my iPhone.

Yeah seems like a fair price. I think R400 is a bit unrealistic tbh.

Bwana if I could afford an Iphone I would definitely use it as my primary reader. Fantastic screen and tons of apps.
