If you ask certain people, they tell you to simply use Wordpress or some other free (or cheap) template to get it going.

Are these viable to use ?
At what point do you need to get a developer and pay $$$ bucks for , if you like the template ?

Depends on how many products & how busy the website will get....

I recommend going with WordPress first as the startup cost will be low initially...

Wordpress + Woocommerce + Theme and you have the makings of a decent store.

No need to build a bespoke system.

Built this site using the above -https://wood.tools4.co.za 17000 products on the one domain.

All other services plug into it pretty seamlessly so you don't need to custom connect anything like mailchimp etc..

If it gets busy you can ramp up server resources

It's as expensive as you have budget for. We build WooCommerce stores and costs can range from thousands to millions depending on what you're building and the level of customisation required. If you have a lot of e-commerce questions, I'd suggest joining the Insaka E-Commerce Community Facebook Group which is the biggest local e-commerce community. There are many people there that have embarked on the journey with both WooCommerce and Shopify (we build those too). It is totally possible to build the basics yourself if you have the time to learn.
