So just popped into my local Edgars & Jet. And here the cheap tablets they currently have:

Do these tablets come with a 3G or do they only work through WiFi?
The units are only WiFi at this stage but they will be 3G capable on the new models that will be available by mid 2013.

Some customers advised us that the WiFi is working well with their 3G dongles whilst others had no luck. From our preliminary findings it seems that it depends on the type of dongle itself. Those that are made by ZTE are problematic at the moment whereas some other makes are fine. We believe this may be related to the software of the dongle. Customers who wish to operate the tablets specifically with a 3G dongle need to ensure that they use these specific dongles.

Does the tablets allow What’s App and does it take sim cards?
It doesn’t allow What’s App as this model doesn't use a sim card – you require a sim card with a cellphone number for
this to work. The new 3g unit that will be launched in June 2013 will have a sim slot and will thus be able to
accommodate What’s App.

My comment: WTF? How can it not take Whatsapp? Surely the one with the sim card will be integrated with 3G, a.k.a sim slot, and that will be the sole difference. Don't understand how Android 4.03 can't take Whatsapp and then use over WiFi.

What? Do you know any other wifi-only tablet of any other Android version which can take whatsapp?

Any android device can run whatsapp over wifi if it you have an android phone and both have been rooted.
Other than that the samsung tab2 and note series tablets can do whatsapp without needing to jump through hoops.

Perhaps I wasn't clear.

Whatsapp chooses not to support wifi only tablets, regardless of version of Android
 
I can vouch for the Alcatel.
Good screen resolution.Excellent reader.

Sound quality and battery (4 hrs max continuous usage) a bit crappy.

Wifi only tablet.
Whatsapp will still work.
 
WhatsApp uses your cellphone number to identify you, sends an initial SMS for confirmation etc. So obviously it's not going to work with a tablet that doesn't have a sim, at least not without jumping through some hoops.

BS. I use Whatsapp on my PC and my PC doesn't have a sim card.

And what lengths did you have to go to in order to make it work:rolleyes:

I wouldn't buy any of these tablets anyway, old/slow CPUs, low resolution screens and only 512MB RAM on the Blaupunkt will just lead to frustration. Rather spend a bit a more and get a Nexus 7.
 
Well then. The price confirms that. For people looking to buy something for the child. Or someone looking for an entry level reader.
 
I had a wifi only "chinese" make tablet. Whatsapp worked 100% on it. If I remember correctly, the sms verification failed and then there was a option whereby a verification number is send via a voice call to the number to which whatsapp is linked. So basically, the phone rings, you answer, listens to code, enter on tablet and whatsapp is registered.

Noticable distortion when the volume is cranked up past the halfway mark and barely audable through earphones.

Ideal if your planning to watch a movie with virtually no exterior noise but forget using it as an mP3 for music.
