I recently acquired a Linksys 3G/HSDPA router (WRT54G3G) and whilst I know that it is capable of GPRS, 3G and HSDPA there is no mention of EDGE.

Is the data card, as opposed to the router, the determining factor when assessing which technology can be used for establishing a connection to the network?

Yup, and then you obviously must have EDGE in your area. Typically GPRS and EDGE is seen as one technology (2G) and 3G-R99 and HSDPA as one (3G).

Thanks V3G. In the router setup, I cannot see EDGE, just three options...
1. GPRS
2. 3G/HSDPA only
3. 3G/HSDPA preferred

If I choose 3, am I likely to receive EDGE if I have a E620 modem and am in EDGE coverage area? 3G/HSDPA signal is too feint unfortunately.

If you choose option 1 or option 3, you should be able to get EDGE, try it and watch the colour of the LED on the Huawei E620 data card modem...

While we are on the topic, I need to buy the 3G router and a datacard for use in a rural town. They have EDGE. Which card would you recommend?

Here is a list of the currently supported cards (on the current firmware)

Option GlobeTrotter HSDPA ‘7.2 Ready’ E
Novatel Merlin XU870 (HSDPA Express 34 w/ adaptor)
Huawei E618
Huawei E630 (HSDPA)
Novatel Merlin U740 (HSDPA)
Option GT 3G+ (HSDPA)
Huawei E620 (HSDPA)
Option 3G Datacard
Option 3G Quad
Novatel Merlin U630

I would go for the Merlin XU870 WITH the Express 34 adapter (to convert the express card to fit in the CardBus/PCMIA slot).

If you have a faint 3G signal, have you considered an external high gain antennae ?

Thanks, agree on getting a 7.2 card.

Also on the external antenna. I'd put it on any router installation, even if it has a good signal. You can never have too strong a signal...!

Hey guys

Thanks so much for the feedback. Tried it out last night and was achieving downloads in the region for 10kbps on the "GPRS only" setting... so it must also feature EDGE.

In terms of the external antenna, will do. Sounds good to me.
