I have been connecting to the Vodacom EDGE service from home using a SAMBA 75 USB modem for about a month and speed seems a bit slow. Using the Vodacom speed test I never get better than 83 kbps down and sometimes much less... up is pretty stable at 24 kbps. Modem connects and suggests that 230 kbps should be possible.

Signal strength is always good at better than 70%. Name of the tower that I connect to has recently changed to "Outdoor" from "Water Reservoir" but the speed has not altered.

Am I being unrealistic in expecting better speeds? On the positive side the connection is stable and have only lost connection for a couple of hours one morning in the last month.

I'll check what the number of slots are available to you.

A dramatic improvement... now getting between 190 - 202 kbps down and 15 - 31 kbps up

I am living in rented accomodation for the next 4 months and dont want to commit to any contract until I move into the new house and see what is possible from there. I got the SAMBA modem cheap and at this stage speed is not as important to me as the cost of the data bundles. I have got myself a 4U zero contract with bolt on 500 mb bundle which I will increase next month to the 1 gb bundle.... and thats my bundle

V3g, many thanks for your assistance.... as a matter of interest, what needed to be done to get this improvement?

I think they upgraded the backbone to the tower, so you better not tell them it's only for 4 months!

I'd still look at 3G speeds, it's the same bundle cost as EDGE. Look out foe e 'pre-owned' HSDPA card.

No problem, I asked the regional guys to contact someone called 'Waiting costumer'.

OK, could not find anyone in Yzerfontein who make costumes but this is the general status:

The Man himself said:
We are putting in 2 microcells in Pearl Bay.

Very originally called Pearl Bay MC1 and Pearl Bay MC2.

Transmission for Pearl Bay MC1 should be given to us on 16 July and Pearl Bay MC2 on the 20 June. Hopefully its this year.

These are 2G only.

Pearl Bay MC2 is closest to the entrance to the area. Pearl Bay MC1 is near the end.
