Tuks Civil Engineering is accredited by ECSA. Th standards of engineering training cannot be dropped because ECSA is a signatory of the Washington Accord.

I was just about to say that. But I've heard reports that SA could lose its international engineering standard if a Bill (forget what it is called) is passed to create a "Super Council". I think it was shelved, but I am sure the ANC could revive it at any time :rolleyes:

Would be interesting to compare % of drop-out rates (in engineering) from 1980-2008 or something like that.

A very interesting point Chris.
 
The stats shown to us earlier this year is that something like 40% don't make the examination, that is to say a average of above 40%. Of those about 70% go through to the 2nd year, by the end of the 4th year 18% pass, the rest are either repeating modules or dropped out. We cant say anything for this year so far.

Indeed. the proposed Built Environment Professions Bill was withdrawn because it did not fully engaged with important stakeholders like ECSA. In principle, ECSA is in support of the bill as long as it does not compromise the engineering profession at large and SA standing internationally.

Mogroth - don't make the mistake of taking yourself as a benchmark for the majority. If you are doing well, it could be down to a number of factors. A teacher who saw your potential, your own damn hard work or a multitude of other factors. I do not speak English at home yet managed to beat the stuffing out of most native English speakers in school. Yet, when I go to my home country - the students there have a better understanding of grammar than 90% of the people here. Not to mention Maths, Physics, Chemistry etc etc...
 
When will the ppl realise that none of this bee/aa stuff makes a difference unless ppl are educated. School is suppose to be hard and you are suppose to be smarter than you parents..
If it take you 20 years to get a matric good at least you have one of value. Look at most highly corporate firms, they are still most pale. Educated ppl will make a better south africa.

So ppl are poor, make school a place that poor ppl can compete with the most wealthy of ppl instead of dumbing down an education system.. the the wealthy will go to private school and have a huge advantage over the much larger poor comunity and we will never have equality..

I think for the greater good... we should do what we should have done 14 years ago.. and forget the now.. and plan for the future... start a education system from grade 1 that is awesome and everyone who is already in school.. unlucky...

People who speak Xhosa can have that as their first language and then choose anything else as second.

Many people struggle at tertiary level because they are struggling to understand the language before they can even begin to try to understand the concepts.

Its up to the Xhosa or Zulu communities to grow their language so students will be able to learn in their mother tongue and tertiary institutions.

As for the language.. look at it on a global scale.. and learn chinese, english, french or spanish.

greggpb I may agree with much of what you have to say, however, I cannot take it seriously if you cannot even bother to write in English when posting something. "ppl" is NOT an English word, and this is NOT a Mxit forum as far as I can work out!

haha granted.. ppl is on of the only shortenings I use. As you can tell my spelling is shocking and people(that took me 5 attempts) is one of those words I have a mental block on and never spell right.

It's that same as I over use the ...

LOL, no pms this side...it's just that I am an English teacher and am getting more and more desperate by the day when students think that writing Mxit English is perfectly acceptable.

When I saw ppl...once again....I saw red...;)
