EFF 'banned' from SABC broadcasts: Ndlozi

The Economic Freedom Fighters has accused the SABC of banning EFF coverage ahead of the May 7 general election.

"As things stand, the SABC has completely banned the EFF and has also issued an official communication that the EFF will not be represented in any of the weekly elections debates," party spokesman Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said in a statement on Wednesday.

"The SABC television division is being manipulated by puppets of certain political parties to completely ban anything that has to do with the EFF on television."

The EFF would write to the Independent Communications Authority of SA, Communications Minister Yunus Carrim, and the board of the SABC to demand the immediate unbanning.

"If Icasa, the communications minister, and the SABC board do not lift the television broadcasts ban on the EFF we will approach courts to compel them to do so..."

Ndlozi claimed SABC staff were prevented from covering the EFF's March 17 press conference to announce its election lists.

"We have it in good authority that the SABC crew that was supposed to cover the press conference was physically prevented from using the SABC cameras," said Ndlozi.

The following day, EFF leader Julius Malema did a pre-recorded interview with the broadcaster's Channel 404 for a show called Question Time, anchored by Mpho Tsedu, but the interview was not aired.

Later, Malema allegedly received a message which read: "Afternoon Julius. Thank you for making time this morning to talk to me on Question Time. The interview was scheduled to go on air today at 17:30 as I had mentioned to you. However, that won't be the case. I want to apologise for the inconvenience I have caused as a result of this 'no-show' today. Mpho."

Ndlozi said this was a clear message of the ban on broadcasts related to the party.

SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago dismissed the allegation.

"You know that cannot be true. You have seen them on our platforms. We are used to this at election time," he said.

"Everyone wants maximum attention. All the political parties complain because they want attention from us. We will continue to do our work as we do."

It's unreasonable to expect Dagga party to get the same coverage as DA, for instance. I think the coverage should be based on the viewers' interests on the party, which is also difficult to articulate. Perhaps the best method is to use the percentage votes each party got the last time around and give the coverage accordingly. But then how would you determine the coverage EFF should get then? Arggh this can't work either way, so let SABC do what's best for advertisers.
 
Perhaps reading the story before commenting on the sensationalist headline is the correct approach. You have EFF making claims which the SABC are dismissing, the heading leads one to believe that the SABC has banned the EFF, which is not true.

This past Sunday there was a pre-election debate with an audience on SABC 1 and the EFF was also slated to appear, but they were conspicuous by their absence. The ANC is so scared, they went as far as covering the ACDP's manifesto launch but not the EFF's. Also Mantashe chickened out of debating Shivambu at a similar debate held at UNISA last week. At that one the DA had Maimane and the UDM Holomisa.

EFF Branch of Kimberley successfully protested its way into SABC elections debate

Members of the EFF in Sol Plaatjie Sub-Region took a correct decision as a sub-region to launch a protest against the SABC Elections debate which took place in their region last night. Upon realizing the determination of the fighters, the SABC unexpectedly conceded and allowed them to be inside the debate. Not only that, but also on the panel.

The SABC program of Elections Debate has not had EFF since it begun. Furthermore, the EFF has experienced poor coverage in all major programs of the SABC epitomized by the attempted cancellation of the CIC’s interview on Question Time.
