Effect of insulating our roof

Actually a bit harder to see effect in the winter but that's partly because of the aggressive heating going on in the daytime to make the room habitable.

That plunge to 10.4 in August 2024 was the time I left the glass out of the windowpanes overnight.

Did it for winter but it's had a very noticeable effect in summer too. 135mm Aerolite. Can recommend.

These are absolute temps not relative to outside ambient but best I can do.

Years ago, in my previous home, I painted my roof with that roof paint that promised to decrease the home temps, it did not work, installed isotherm, what a difference.
 
I had a similar experience with roof insulation, game changer, milder indoor temps all year round, best bang for your buck. It must be amazing when people do new builds and put insulation in all 4 quadrants including double glazing, radically reduce heating and cooling costs, the savings over many decades must be quite something.

yes it's a lifstyle changer, I don't even bother with my gas heater anymore in winter - gets to hot inside
 
Proper roof ventilation also helps.

there must be cool air intakes under the soffits (eve)

and hot air outlets on the roof itself. those wind powered turbines help alot.

I'm still planning on installing these wind turbines but must first install the solar panels and see where I can install them.
 
I had my Bedroom ceiling redone last week (after about 6 years).
The old Isotherm in there was 50mm and not too badly worn.
But I bought new 100mm Isotherm as well and re-installed both the 50mm and the 100mm, so effectively now have 150mm insulation.
The 100mm was R550 per 6m x 1.2m roll, at Builders.
Definitely a huge difference

About R 95 per square metre from Builders. Plus a lot of time because I decided to clean up a bit first and the dust was several cm thick.

Comes from a DHT22 sensor that I log to my Rpi.

I also heard this. We already have open soffits so I might add a whirlybird. I just wonder with clay tiles and no underlay we probably have quite a bit of ventilation already.
 
my underlay rotted away decades ago. the roof insulation I had installed has a tin foil backing. this takes care of any water / moisture ingress.

the wind turbine helps with cooling & moisture evacuation.

I'm assuming ideally you close the hot air outlets during winter?

I’ve been wondering if these would make any difference to my garage which of course has no ceiling or insulation of any kind.
 
Has anyone used Isoboard?
I'm thinking of going this route, maybe with a retrofit installation onto the existing ceiling boards.

The majority of our roof is flat, "sink dak" and one or two bedrooms have slanted roof tile roofs (also no entrance points into the ceiling), with only about a foot between the roof and the ceiling, and no manhole covers or entrances, since almost nothing or no one will fit there.

I'm sure you can. these days with smart devices & Ras Pi you can do it automaticaly. I've never done it.

My dream is to have proper smart controled ventilation system through out the house, but it will be overkill in my little shak.
