A trainer at the gym worked out a new program for me.

As far as cardio is concerned, the program indicated that I must exercise "at 60% effort". What does that mean and how do you measure it on the equipment ?

60 % of Max heart rate i would assume.
As a guess, take 220 - ur age and thats your max. (there are other calculations out there, if you interested let me know)

I always find that figure quite low though. I would say just aim for 135 - 155 Bpm, most of the running / cucling equipment have Hr monitors built in.

Unfortunately the rowing machine does not have heart rate monitors :)

That figure you quoted is not that low for me ! I normally average around 125 .... slacker that I am !

It differs per person :) You possibly have a lower max by default or your body may be recovering from the child birth.
if you are slightly out of breathe (breathing a little hard) then you are probably at the right effort level.

If you are investing in a trainer, it would be beneficial to buy an entry level heart rate monitor to optimize your training. Its not that expensive, and gives a good indication of how hard you are actually working.
IT will also show you when your body is tired or over worked, and when you are just being lazy
