First tax return and SARS has decided to audit me, granted its showing they owe me a substantial sum. According to them 31 working days. Has anyone else been audited on efiling? Did they take the full 31 days to check up on you. Could really do with that money *Sigh.

Isn't just a request for docs? That shouldn't take too long, but a real audit can take months.

It should not take more than a month that. If it does phone and ask where they are in the process.
SARS decided to audit my hubby too. His tax return this year was rather complex because he changed companies, and changed medical aide, and changed to a travel allowance and vehicle allowance etc. All our own retirement policies.
The 31 days is the time you get to submit all the supporting documentation for your tax return claim.
Thereafter they can take anything from 21 - 90 working days to go through everything and finalise the audit results.
Settle in for a possibly long wait. Maybe you get lucky and it's not that complicated and they get you done rather quickly.

I got audited by SARS after submitting more expenses this time round. They requested all supporting docs and then proceeded to remove all my newly added expenses with some lame "you didn't earn this money you are claiming expenses against through commission on sales you tosser."
Process was painless and faster than I expected after I managed to resubmit all my docs again - I forgot about my RA first time round and they noticed. My tax is very simple though. I would imagine it could take longer the more complex your return.
