EFT Transfer

Update

So he did a cheque deposit at a ATM. I showed his friend where I work and said I will not give him the PS3 till funds have cleared into my account.

He (after a phone call) and his friend agreed and we parted ways. Lets see if the funds clear. Will update if they do.

I smell a scam though so I dont have high hopes. At least I did not lose my PS3.

Nobody does cheque deposits anymore unless it is a scam - watch them put pressure on you in the coming few days. DON'T CAVE and hand over the goods.

I replied with the below. Waiting on response:
I phoned FNB and they said the cheque will only clear in 7 days. Its very suspicious that the cheque was deposited in a Milnerton ATM which is where Century City is located so then why couldnt I be given cash? I think if you want this deal to continue then cancel the cheque deposit and bring me the cash rather. Otherwise you can pay your friend via deposit and he can draw out the money and pay me cash. U said you would EFT and a cheque deposit via a ATM is not a EFT.

I've sold on a FNB-FNB EFT a couple of times, but always had the buyer do the EFT in my presence.

Played out just as I said above. These guys rip so many people off. I think we should set up a sting.

Its an old trick, they just hope that someone will fall for it.
Brave of the friend to arrive for the transaction though. I didnt even know cheques were used anymore. Its probably nothing in the envelope that will be discovered once someone does the manual checking later.

guy emailed me for my ps3 also said he lived in saldanah , and wanted me to drop it at century city and do a eft.

i told him cash or nothing , did not hear from him again.

This was last week , so probably the same guy

Guys please stop entertaining scammers and losing your hard earned cash. Nobody uses cheques any more. Run away from a person who hands you a cheque.

A person was just telling me their uncle lost 940 000 in a "money making" scam. I think he paid with his retirement money. Another person got to Durban and the accommodation place didn't even exist. There are people who breathe day and night just thinking of new angles to scam you. Be vigilant.

Turned out as expected to be a scam. FNB phoned me at about 4pm and said that the transaction was fraud. No loss just a inconvenience. Wish there was some way or interest from the SAPS to catch these guys.

How did you know that a cheque was used and deposited at an ATM?

Is the info reflected In the sms or email you received or did you have to phone a branch?

The way ATM banking works is you deposit a envelope in the ATM and you manually say how much is in the envelope (and this amount gets reflected into your account till it is cleared). At the close of the day a person goes and counts the cash or cheque. In this case there probably was nothing in the envelope and so they called me to tell me it was fraud. This was at about 16:05.

This is the email you get when a deposit to your account is made:
FNB :-) R3000.00 (cheq/s) deposited to cheq a/c..318871 @ Milnerto ATM. Ref.Graham. 7Jan 11:51

What grates my cheese for lack of a better description is I got a service charge of R16 for the cheque via the atm deposit then another R40 for the reversal of the uncleared cheque with the heading fraud. Since the cheque has not cleared that R3000 is in my account but not usable, but the R3000 they took back has come off my account (actual money) putting my cheque account into negative (which they will prob charge for as well). Now my only recourse is to go into the bank to get it sorted out. What a mission.

It's FNB. The one good thing about them is they will usually sort out these things over the phone, you almost never have to go into a branch.

Regarding cash deposits, the new self-service FNB ATMs don't use envelopes and I highly doubt the ones that do still exist as I haven't seen one years. They have built-in currency-counting machines like the ones tellers use - you just place the cash in the slot and detects how much you deposited, you confirm and the cash reflects immediately. They're basically automated tellers. I've never done cheque deposits, so I wouldn't know if it's automated or manually checked.
