Okay, so the Boss'es son buys a E1820 modem with 5G data bundle, goes out and buys a Netgear MBRN3000 3G router, which he wants to connect to his PS3 and laptop, probably in that order ... <sigh>

Put the whole lot to-gether, switch on, no connection ... , on the router, or the laptop, nor the office PC. Home time comes around ... , the whole kit and kaboodle gets dumped in a plastic carrier bag, and put in my hands - fix and bring back tomorrow morning ...

So I fiddle with the modem, change SIM cards, MTN and Vodacom work great ... , Cell-C all I get rewarded with for my troubles is Error 628:

Try putting Cell-C SIM in my K4505z modem, no change ...

Try different "desktops" no change ...

Lots of head scratching ...

While I have MDMA open, I check the balance on the SIM - SUPRISE!!!

Type *101# into ussd command field ...

Answer: Your account is locked. New customers must RICA first.

So, I have been battling since 15:00 this afternoon, when able, to get this thing to work, modem was bought this morning before 12:00.

So Cell-C, how long do you plan on taking to get this modem RICA'ed ...

Guess I'll have to head on into town, with the Boss'es son and find out ...

What a waste of time so far ...

Your supposed to RICA it when you buy it. It gets activated immediately, and you get 3 different SMS's welcoming you, thanking you, and introducing you to their services. WHOOOOOSH!

I think you have to phone 145 or something and get the sim activated before it will work.

I didn't have to activate the previous ones I have used ... , niether does the Quick start guide , nor the other little booklet that comes with the modem, make any mention of the need to activate the SIM ...

The 2x previous E1820 modems I have helped their owners with, worked that way, maybe the "lady" a Cell-C slipped up this time round ...

Will find out in later this morning ... :(

Well, went in to Cell-C this morning, and they had to re-RICA the SIM, as something happened on the system so that the effort to RICA it yesterday did not go thru, tho, they got a RICA slip, which they pasted on the side of the modem box. After re-RICA'ing, the modem works as well as the previous 2 ...

The folks a CELL-C where help and cheerful ...

Pity about the time and effort wasted by the failed RICA effort ... , modem is working fine on the Netgear MBRN3000 3G router ...

All's well, that ends well, they say ... :)

How long have you been working for the company?

So, does the netgear router MBRN3000 and the cell c (black) speedstick work?
I can't get my router to detect the thing. Constantly fails. Anyone had any luck fixing this problem? Has anyone else had this problem?

Been rica'd and it works on my laptop...
