I have joined Cybersmart as my ISP. They said I can get the following modem/router from them. But what does all this mean?

Billion 7300G Wireless ADSL+2 Modem/Router with QoS, Firewall & 4-port Switch

I'm a noob ..... i know. Just immagine how I feel when I know that I still need to learn how to use Routecentry too to split my 2 accounts. Now THERE is gonna be a couple of questions soon........:o

ADSL+2 = The new ADSL format, we're still on the old format, but it is backwards compatible.
Modem/Router = This piece of hardware is an ADSL modem, and also a router. Router means it can control traffic from and to the ADSL connection.
with QoS = QoS = Quality of service, which is where you can configure the router so that it makes all traffic on port 80 (for example) have the highest priority over other traffic.
Firewall = The ability to block tcpip packets form outside from accessing your network.
4-port switch = A semi-intelligent device with 4 ports for plugging in network cables, it's called a switch cos it can intelligently send data from one thing plugged into the switch to another thing plugged into the switch by examining the tcp packet and senting it to one of the other 3 things instead of just sending the data to everything plugged into it.

Hope this helps.

jdjoubert, get that modem. Dont get their Stock Standard one. Had some problems with that one. And don't worry about RouteSentry, It's easy to set up if you follow the step by step instructions! :D

Thanx, is the 4 port the place I have to plug in all the other PC's? I have an old network ethernet hub, does this mean I dont need that old hub no more. I have 4 PC's.

Maby for you, I read through the step by step thread, but its all greek anyway. I searched for info regarding my first question of what this router is all about..... seems I am the only one that dont know how a ADSL modem router work....:o So I quess my option is to find someone living close by that I can contract in do the whole setup for me for some $$.

Oh, I think Cybersmart said I need to just pay R250 extra to get this wireless ADSL modem/router. And after a year it becomes mine.

That modem is A hub on steroids - aka a Switch. It will do exactly what your hub does currently for you, just better. It will be able to connect 4PC's yes.

Was greek for me at first too. But once the modem is there, and you have the will to do it, the step by step instructions seems rather easy :D
I'm in Gordons Bay btw.

R250 is what you need to pay extra yes - Quite worth it, trust me.

I will give it a shot myself then.

And if all else fails, I will have to go to the bottle store, get some beers, go to the ATM get some $$ and then phone you to try and twist your arm into giving me some advice........ (only joking)

Thanx for the info guys..... admin can maar delete this thread now.

Its quite simple once you get started, you don't need to use all the advanced stuff straight away. Btw unless both of your accounts (local and int) offer 4 concurrent connections you won't be able to use routesentry on all 4 PC's. And don't tell cybersmart you're using another account. :D

I have told them that I want to use Openweb for my local SP. They were fine with it as long as I dont bother them with support for setting up the whole Routcentry thing. (understandably so)

Oh ok, they've chilled out lately then. ;)

I dont know.... I could hear the guy was not too pleased, but I dont want to lie about it and then get into trouble with them. So I opted to ask up front.

There's no way they can prove whether you did or not from their side so if they give you issues in future just deny deny deny. ;)

I opted to not tell them what I plan to do with "MY" line. It's my business. Private. But I understand Why they have that clause though - People can become pain sometimes
