Elden Ring

I have never played Dark Souls. I've played WoW / Diablo, stuff like that.

How much does Elden Ring differ from that, is it something easy to "take up" and enjoy if you've never played something similar?

It's very very different - defiantly not pick up and go.

Before you splash cash see if you can try it out with someone who already has it (or search the high seas)

No, Elden Ring or any of the Dark Souls game are not easy games to just take up. I would recommend watching a couple of videos of a Let's Play before getting it.

Even those don't do justice to the absolutely unforgiving nature of the Fromsoft games.

You have to experience it first-hand.

If you want to have a go, I'd highly suggest starting with dark souls 3 (or maybe dark souls 1) and pick it up on special.

I think it'll give you a more solid foundation to souls games. It's more linear than elden ring which means you'd get a balanced feeling of what the game expects from you without wondering if you took a wrong turn in the open world and just ended up at endgame content.

If you have no idea why you are doing things, that is normal too. I still don't actually know what is really going on in any of these games.

Oh, and a controller is recommended for all the Fromsoftware games.

People give the wrong impression when they put so much emphasis on the sackcloth and ashes aspect and leave out how rewarding these games are when you eventually do git gud (and you can git gud, they’re designed so that you can) Not as frustrating as you’d expect because a string of failures leading to success is to be expected, so you deal with it gracefully*. Every death is a lesson.

These aren’t for casual gamers but they aren’t exclusively for the Cheeto-dusted red bull chugging gamer demigods either. But you will be a gamer demigod by the end.

* lies.

Yeah, you feel like a god among men... and then blighttown puts you in your place again.

Listen here!! FromSoftware!

You throw in the Crucible Knight, ok I get it, make my life difficult why don't you? Cool!

But what is this Bell Bearing Hunter nonsense? Really? WHY?

Well I did have a +15 guts great sword and it was about 3-4 chops and he was moertoe. Did you kill that one ninja assasin (spawns in front of a building with a lift going down) at the altus plateau? I had more trouble with him...

Don't listen to these other people, just pick up the game and have at it - you'll get the gist of it. Check out a walkthrough with dungeon locations to get started and something will grab you.

grab you, slice you, squash you, poison you, pulverise you, bite you, stab you, kick you....

'You died'

/hysterical laughter

Jokes aside, the game is hard and obtuse and unforgiving - it's a real pity on some level that you need walkthroughs to reach the point where you don't just die every 2 minutes 'cos it spoils the early game content imo - that said, there are genuinely rewarding, amazing, and jaw dropping moments (link to relevant post in the 'what gane are playing thread').

What game are you playing now? (Part 2)

I took a break for a week from the game. Some areas in the game gives me anxiety. Just entered Caelid and there's all those big dogs, birds and dragons. That area is more like a horror game.

You forgot about the rot and the poison and the stick insect creatures and the ghostly mages....did I mention the rot?

That area is nasty...
