Word of caution: Don't rob yourself of the experience by following build guides focussing on OP or broken builds in the vain of overwhelming enemies to a point where gameplay goes out the window, nor rune farming to try overlevel the challenge. So I decided to focus a bit on weapons. And I got a guide . So replaced my one uchitana with a much longer one with better range and bleed ashes of war on both. View attachment 1301928
Still very much a souls noob but really hooked on the journey

Granted you should play it any way you choose, but having done some recent PVP and co-op PVE it's unbelieveable how many people are being carried by dual wield dex/blood builds (most in combination with Rivers of Blood).
True. You'd be suprised though how many of the co-op Radagon/Beast fights I was summoned to the host was still using that sort of setup. Which then raises the question if these people even understand why it isn't melting these bosses like the rest. Imo it's why they need to summon co-op to begin withUntil the elden beast.

I did use fightingcowboy here and there when I was totally lostSo I get your point. And agree normally. But since I got twins gaming has taken a massive back seat. For me the best way to experience elden with limited time is to just use guides. Note I generally explore on my own and most of the items they refer to I actually found on my own. I just didn't know what to do with them.
They were always easyFinally "finished" the game this weekend. I'm already pretty far in with NG+.
The bosses in the beginning is so easy now![]()
I'm new to souls consultant for my SOI've got a mage/sword build going + just enough faith to apply Holy effect for skeletons and undead.
Self exploring mostly but being new to Souls games definitely needed a guide in the beginning. Meteorite staff, rock spell and medallion you need to access Altus were all found using a guide.
Now I try to muddle through by visiting things that look different or intriguing on the map until truly frustrated them dip into a guide.
Generally I 'clear' an area as best I can then check a guide for the stuff I missed.
Not for someone who was always a tank in the other souls games and starting as a mage in Elden RingThey were always easy![]()
What is the basics for viability for a mage build? e.g. weapons. Not for someone who was always a tank in the other souls games and starting as a mage in Elden Ring
Was quite the adjustment. But now I shoot lasers like a boss! ( Comet Azur ).

Can absolutely relate to the use of guides in terms of getting you through the general game progress route, especially being new to Souls games. Point was more around many trying to brute force their way through the game by using broken builds, some of which could be nerfed at any timeSo I get your point. And agree normally. For sure. I hesitate to tell people how to play these games for fear of coming across as one of those painful Souls nerds, but it does concern me that some people miss out on the unique experience of trying to make a build work through trial and error by watching a YT vid, following it verbatim all the way through and never attempting another play-through with an entirely different approach.@Iwojima So I'll do a screeny later today, but I use a few weapons, well actually they are just tools you apply for the effect you want. You know like a ninja. haha.
I have the rivers of blood, god skin peeler, cross naginata, mohg's candles stick spear (Mohgwyn's Sacred Spear), the black knife (and it's counter part, the holy one), pully bow, crepuss black key crossbow and finally a pully crossbow. For example for farming the robs are good, but for a movement stick, that is a weapon that you can use to move quickly around the room (ash of war), my cross naginata is it. Otherwise there is the god skin peeler for more heavy damage besides mohg's candle stick. Then you can go with a bit of range backup from the pully bow or more shorter bursts from the pully crossbow.
For the mains I run the dragon communion seal + rob/god skin peeler with rest as alt weapons depending on the situation. Not sure what to call this amalgamation, but main focus was arc/faith with dex/vigor coming in second along endurance and mind of course. I suppose you could call this "easy mode" but there was a few setups you can't just go in all guns blazing while that was fun in itself. This actually started out as a dual dagger setup only, but I just could not close the gap quick enough and started to dabble in faith and its incantations.
In reality the 3rd, well more 4th iteration of it did finish up the game either way. Was a good journey to explore the ends of it and I applied what I learned from it to my other my other builds.
In the end if you had that ****ed fun time within the fromsoft... that is all that mattered.
edit
I'll probably do a more "purist" run if I'm up to it to see how far I can get. Typically where you add restrictions yourself like no spirit, ghost or clone summons. idk.

Agreed. But the camera boss is also a bit op.I took a break again because the horse controls are so annoying when trying to do precise jumps. In Deeproot Depths climbing up the roots. On top of that the game left my runes in mid air after the horse missed its jump, making it impossible to reclaim them. Then I went to try and get them and fell again. I haven't died to a single enemy in 75hrs but have about 10 deaths now from falling mainly due to poor controls. Gravity is the most dangerous thing in the game.
