Elderly neighbours

Are there rules about this? Unlikely. There is nothing you can do here apart from ignore them and carry on with your lives as usual. If they want to be in an old-aged home with these rules, then they should be there. The only issue here is they will make up the body corporate majority so rules could easily come into the picture at the next AGM...

Not so easy, to have rules valid it has to be registered at the deeds office.

I'd also complain about that last one, you've got a big building dedicated to that, go use it to sing, perhaps they aren't christians and don't want to listen to that. Be considerate here, not everyone is of the same religion.

You know, we sang a few songs, enjoyed ourselves, they all left... if it was a party with dance music playing what difference would it have made? Or a braai with everyone drinking? It was 1 hour out of 5 years of being here. Religion has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Just put a gravestone in your yard with some dirt in front of it.

On the gravestone it should read "Here lies the last complainant".

I am sure your complaints will drop

Mo I disagree. You can't dictate to people what they can and can't sing. Whether it Justin Bieber's latest abuse of the eardrums or a christian song and dance...

I must say I agree. It would be annoying to me but as long its at a decent hour you have to tolerate a bit of noise from your neighbours if you're going to go in for communal living.

It's a bit of a power thing. Many old people have zero power left, and they cling to these little things like you cannot believe, as 'rule' enforcement in your complex is as much power as they currently wield. Whether or not the rules are actually broken ends up being irrelevant. The best policy is smile-and-nod, and keep doing whatever you want.

No you can't - but one type of music is more than likely to piss someone off more than another..and hence, more likely to be reported.

You've got to be one helluva kant to go about doing that. As a staunch atheist, even I can accept some Switchfoot, POD and All American Rejects on the odd occasion...:D

What I'm getting at is that there are certain triggers for people. I can't stand barking dogs, its usually a sign of a neglected animal - but power-tools going all day doesn't really bother me, unless of course, its a jack hammer.

Hahaha, well seeing as you seem to want to have a go at the religious angle, please refrain from singing with your Bieber music as I classify that as a new age religion.

Why some people always have to have a go at religion, I dunno.

Back on topic: I stayed in a complex for a year and a half and not only did people complaining about just about everything, but a lot of people were also just really inconsiderate. It seldom works well, we weren't meant to live on top of each other.

I was really really upset yesterday. I feel we are considerate towards these oldies, we treat it like an old age home, even though it is not one, any one of any age can reside here!

What I did was hang a few towels to dry from about 11-1, I did not make a noise, or anything! In the day I know they have their naps at 11-3 so we never go out and let the boys play in that time, or ride their bikes.

We were considering buying this property, but looking at the rules, no ball play, no running etc on the communal grass, I am wondering if that is something for us then. I mean - 2 boys not allowed to run? The dont walk, they always RUN...so then I need to keep them inside then.

The problem is, we are the only young people living here. No one has kids, we are the only ones. And the ones who are home in the day, has a court yard on the other side of their home, fully in the sun, so they can hang whatever they want in the sun, I cannot. We live west facing, they do east facing. Kwim?

I have a slight idea who it is who complained, and I really feel like having a chat...I told the man who came to deliver the complaint, that I will be very happy to not hang my laundry in the sun for 2 hours a day, if said complainer would add R300 to my electricity bill, in order for me to use the tumble dryer. Have you ever smelled towels, which you leave out to dry, in the winter, which takes up to 3 days...? It smells...MMM not so well! SO yeah....

They are old people, they have nothing to do with themselves the whole day....so yeah, they need to spoil other peoples day, with stupid, complaints....

My father who owns this property said he is ready to receive a written complaint, until then, I can just as well hang my towels!

Old people complain no matter what. Theyre bored and their brains are failing. Most of them have serious memory issues (like if they place something, they forget where they placed it and then blame you for its loss). Their sense of entitlement far exceeds that of a middle age, middle class house wife.

I love the old buggers but theyre often very painful. Our offices are across the road from a bunch of retirement homes and they are always complaining about some or other bizarre issue. We have a tiny pond on our property. I mean its about a meter wide and about 10 cm deep. In it are a couple of goldfish and guppies. The old people are convinced that the frog sounds they hear at night come from our pond (the pond is about 300 meters away from the closest retirement home). Even though we have drained it several times for them and not found a single frog! They seem to ignore the fact that their old age home is in a valley with a small stream next to it, and totally have focused their elderly crank focus on our little pond.

Reason or rationality mean very little in discussions with them. I guess you just gotta learn to live and ignore their old age funkyness or move.

Just get them to take a swim in the alien cocoon infested waters.

Is all.

Anyone got a good old finger smiley for me? Eish wiz, you have a great day hear? J.

Poor things.

Remember, we will all be old like that one day :)

I want to be the senile old man that everyone moans about. Stand on the porch in my undies and shout at people to get off the grass.

I've lived for 85-years! FTW! I'll do what I want!

True. You reckon we will be like that in our old age? I remember when I was a kid I promised not to tell kids what the adults told us... freaks me out when I now sound the same as them. I have promised myself I will not be a fuddy duddy old man... but when the time comes... :o

@MrsC. I can understand your drying situation. I battle to dry ours in full sun just about the whole day in winter :(

Well since the dog died, someone needs to get the blame ;).

MrsC's parents are OOOOOLLLLDDDD - I think 78 and 75 yrs or so. But they're awesome. In fact they're the closest people to us here in SA. That whole fuddy duddy thing can be avoided, you just have to stay active and fresh.
