"System is down" — Election outages frustrate South African voters

Election officials at some voting stations around South Africa told voters on Monday that they could not vote due to a national Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) system outage, and that they should try again later.

MyBroadband received reports from Meyerspark Primary School that a system outage prevented officials from allowing voters to cast their ballots.

It was national and the delay was annoying but not the end of the world - took 40 minutes.
The washable ink they use to mark is a tad suspect, it comes off with hardly an effort - that is a quick rub with some spit

Complaints ranged from voting locations not being correctly updated, to new voters who had registered in September not being in the system.

In both these scenarios, the voters were not allowed to cast their ballot.

I am surprised by people calling these machines tables, maybe it comes in a variety, but the ones always used at our stations looks like an enlarged till slip printer with a barcode scanner.

It was definitely a tablet where I was.

They scanned my ID using its camera.

Lone Hill was a **** show...

One IEC official was telling people with surnames H through Z must stand in the queue on the left, only for another official to come 5 minute later say say surnames M through Z must queue on the right. They did this several times causing absolute mayhem.

An ANC official tried to sneak into the voting area by covering her ANC regalia in a long jacket. Some members of ACTIONSA spotted her and gave the IEC officials a proper earful.

An "entitled" female kept standing on top of an elderly man behind us in the queue. At first the old man politely asked her to back off and social distance. Entitled person chose to ignore him after he pleaded with her and continued standing literally a breath away from the guy. Old guy then stepped out of the queue to avoid her and she pushed in front of him. As things were about to erupt into a screaming match, entitled person skipped about 15 people ahead and pretended to "know" somebody further ahead.

The queues didn't move at all in the 3 hours I was there and many people simply turned around and left without voting. I had to go back later in the afternoon to vote and surprise surprise they capturing everything on paper because nothing is working.

Was complete chaos at my station. I've only ever voted at exactly the same venue for the last 16 years.

Today they tell me I'm not registered at this station, even though my wife is. After debate they said ok I can go vote.

People were getting ready to throw punches because of flaring tempers at my station.

The IEC dimwit at one stage said to the people in the queue she's so confused she doesn't know what to do.

This sounds very fishy as there wasn't one piece of technology when I went to vote this morning! My name was checked on a printed voters roll, my ID book was stamped, I cast my vote and walked out. My wife didn;t even have to get her ID Card scanned or whatever they supposed to do.
The IEC needs to investigate!!!
