Electric fence & telkom copper line issues

Been noticing that when ever I turn on my electric fence my adsl stability goes out the window. My line runs a 3-4 metres above my electric fence and has been like that for years but only recently has it started to give me stress.

Also get no sync when it rains. Telkom techie say they need to replace the box in the neighbors backyard but they never get around to doing it.

Is there something I can do, other than switching off my electric fence.
 
Sorry for the 'off topic' question BUT: Why do you have a electric fence around your house? Do you reside on a wild farm with dangerous animals roaming around your house? I am sure you have a obvious reason but not residing in South Africa, I find this interesting.

Sadly we live in a country where crime is ...erm ... a daily occurance. If you want your stuff there when you get home you do things to keep it safe. My guess is the OP has a brick wall over 2m high & on top anoner piece with electric wires on top. He probably also has a security alarm linked to an armed response company. also probably have burglar bars infront of all windows.

or people do all of that & live in gated (security access) communities with all the above included.

There are very few places where that is not needed.

OP can you try find out if /how many people there are linked to that box?

Maybe enlist their complaints help? Cos if the techie says old box must go then you will need a few people to complain same time.

A lot of people in SA have electric fences around their properties. I myself have one around my house. They are not uncommon and are for protection against crime

Strangely enough I don't have an electric fence or burglar bars, all I have is an alarm with armed response and I have 9 large sliding doors all around my house. I also have no front wall.

Well when the same guy jumps over your wall a few times and takes what he wants, making the domestic worker scared sh**less, you have to increase your protection.

Anyway, I'm going to rally the neighbors and see if it gets the box replaced. Is there a chance that my electric fence is interfering with my line as I notice static/scratching sound and then the dial tone, whenever I power my fence.
 
Electric fences were especially nasty with the old analogue lines.

To limit the fences affect on your line you going to have to –

1. Make sure your fence is in good working order and that the insulators aren’t cracked and there no branches or stuff touching your fence. If your fence is arcing it really going to mess with your line.
2. Make sure your line does not run parallel with your fence as this can cause induction and your line will pick up a lot more noise from your fence.
3. You may also need to get a electrician to check the your home wiring, you might have a problem your grounding.
4. If you still having trouble with your line you need to put up a mesh or wire screen. You mount it on wooden posts running between your line and fence. Also this screen should then be grounded. So any induction or interference from your fence should be diverted away from your line and in to the ground.
 
I use an electric fence purely to keep the cows out and the dogs in. Although I was pretty pleased to hear a human yelp at 3:00am once.

As GforceD mentioned, any arcing/shorting near the phone line will cause interference, and will be worse when it rains.

The grounding rod(s) for your fence/charger are pretty important, but problems there will show up in dry soil, not when it rains.
 
Ok what you need to do is get Telkom to replace the particular line that runs over the electric fence with TWISTED PAIR cable. For some reason they don't always use this type of line, which is far more effective at resisting that type of interference. I'm sure this will solve your problem

All i have is Dogs and a wall dont tell anyone :P

No crimes for 22 years yet houses next to me have been broken into and they have electric fences, burglar bars etc.

I think they find enjoyment breaking into secure places
 
Your electric fence is arcing.

You should be able to hear it going tick tick tick.
Each tick releases an electromagnetic wave that causes the grief.

Find the spot where it's doing that and solve the problem, it's usually a kink in the wiring or a corner that's too tight. The aim is that the electricity must travel in the wire, not jump across.
While you're at it, smack the useless installers.

P.S. When it's raining the arcing has a much stronger effect. I'd bet that the blue box replacement has not happened because it's not necessary.

Thanks for the advice, sounds right. My lines are dead now, even though my fence is off, so telkom need to fix something. While I sort out the fence

Was the same with me .. until one day .. now it is like alcatraz .. sad, but it is the reality in our beloved country. Sorry for going a little off-topic here.

If a techie comes out, make sure you get him to do what I mentioned about the twisted pair wire. If you run that over the noisy fence, it wont interfere nearly as much afaik
