Electricity Consumption

How is it so little for over 1000kW? Do you purchase in bulk at the start of the month or as and when needed?

My bill is now sitting on R3000. And I will have to purchase once more till I get to the 1st on July!

My kW credit is drastically reduced after my 3rd purchase. I only get 97kW for the 500 from the 3rd purchase as apposed to the 197kW on the 2nd purchase and 467kW on the 1St purchase. Makes no sense to me. Should I buy in bulk at start of the month?

whereabouts, btw?

COJ I pay R1350 for 1000kwh.

Post Paid...

I don't do this Prepaid stuff...

I usually purchase on the Fnb portal. But don't buy in bulk on the first as I don't get the free basic electricity of 100kW and that made me want to purchase for 500 at a time whenever needed after the first. I have read many posts says that there is no difference in bulk purchases as apposed to smaller purchases. But maybe I need to try the bulk purchase and see what I get from that.

NEVER EVER buy in bulk as the City of Cape town will put you into a higher usage bracket - and charge you accordingly. The trick is to buy on the first of the month and only buy just a little bit more than you need for the duration of the month while avoiding going into a usage higher bracket.

Take the time to read this carefully because your tariff can easily vary between R1 per kWh to R2.50 per kWh depending on when you make your purchase and for how much.

*PS. Thank goodness I'm now a direct Eskom customer in JHB. No more calculations and my per kWh cost is a lot less.

Wonder how Eastern Cape is.
Here in East London we buy for R1k a month and carry a lot over and thus top every 3rd month we can skip a month.

Think our per kW is R1. 78

Now wonder if they also work in blocks, because then will buy only R600 a month etc

Following. My usage basically doubles in winter.

Why don't you put separate/dedicated DB's for the flats , and an energy monitor to, errrr, monitor ....

Well other than your usage htf can you get just shy of 100 units for R500? I would pay around R1500 for all of that and people actually still think that prepaid is better.

Many 'service providers ' that install these prepaid meters charge up to 20% 'admin/management' fees.

If u on the municipal supplied prepaid meters you either pay on par or a little more than post paid.

The only time I think there's an advantage for prepaid is if u have tenants which reduces risk of unpaid bills or u maintain ur own usage n don't surpass ur old usage and u get FNB'S 15% ebucks

This is illegal, by the way.

Prepaid in Joburg is cheaper as long as you use less than about 2500kwh per month last time I checked.
The FNB discount makes it even cheaper.

See this is where Durban falls on its arse...

Prepaid is not cheaper than Postpaid, they are exactly the same price. So why would I pay them to come and install a meter and just add complications to my life if I'm not going to save a single cent on the actual electricity itself.

problem we have with post paid
sometimes the billing cycle is 40 days and the next month it is 20 days . Imagine that on a sliding scale

They adjust the sliding scale windows based on the number of days in the cycle.

living alone in a 1 bed flat, with no heaters or electric blankets used in the month, a lot of oven use for cooking, and 1 x pc that is only on when it needs to be, I go through ~510kWh a month, which I pay R900 a month for.

Holy crap. Family of 5 with two geysers and I don't even spend R900/month on electricity...

Here is something you need to check. switch off everything in your flat, every single appliance, unplug them all and switch off the isolator to the geyser and stove, etc.

Then go and check your meter. if it is still ticking over, there is a wiring issue and you are busy providing power to another unit in your complex .......

Now to ID which CB is involved, switch them off one by one until the meter stops. If you switch them all off and the meter still ticks over, switch off the main CB. It is not unknown to find a wiring issue between the meter and your main CB as well.....

That's a crazy.

I'm living alone in a 2 bedroom apartment. Geysers stays on. Have a chest freezer. No heaters and the stuff. I use about 300kw which amounts to R350 per month. I'm in centurion

To OP
If you go ahead and install prepaid meters you'll possibly have to reduce your rent if you've stated that Electricity is included when renting. You've could possibly read there consumption for a couple of months and if exorbitant change the agreement that they should pay for their own consumption

Hi guys,

Just posting an update with regard to my query. I have come to realise that my municipality had me on the incorrect Tariff plan. I was on tariff A, meaning that I was on a step tariff, the more you buy the more you pay. I have since been moved to tariff B where I pay a flat rate of R1.69 per kw. It all makes sense now. Moral of the story, please ensure that you are on the correct tariff plan when your monthly usage changes from what the normal usage is.

Tariff A - 0-600kw = R1.03
>600kw <=700kw = R1.75
>700kw = R4.93

Tariff B = Flat rate R1.69 irrespective of the number of kw purchased.

Note: This is for the Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality
Hi,

Thought I could get some advice here.
I have a 3 bedroom house with one geyser (150L). 2 flats on my property (one 2 bedroom and one 1 bedroom) with one additional geyser (100L) to supply both flats with hot water. It looks like my electricity usage is outrageous. Here is my purchase history for June 2016.

1 June - R500 = 467 kW + 100 free = 567 kW
15 June - R500 = 197kW
18 June - R500 = 97kW
21 June - R500 = 97 kW
23 June - R500 = 97kW
25 June - R500 = 97 kW
Today is the 26th and I am left with a balance of 72kW.

2 bedroom flat - 2 occupants.
1 bedroom flat - 1 occupant.

I do not use any heaters or electric blankets in winter. We are only 2 in the main house and bath once per day. There isn't a timer installed on both geysers. I do not understand why my electricity runs out so quick. Don't know what to do. I have now decided to install a prepaid meter in the 2 flats to determine what my tenants electricity usage is like as compared to mine as I feel that I am more conservative with my usage ad apposed to theirs. Is there any suggestions on what I can do about this? Should I purchase in bulk at start of each month or is it the same if I purchase throughout the month? Any suggestions will help.

Total kW usage this far for the month is 1152.
