Electricity networking for your home

Anybody have a price for these units?

I have seen the netgear versions of the device, but prices only in dollars.
 
I know this has been around for ages, but when will it come into action? When can we get something like this, stick it in and know we have internet access? And how will we know if we're supported? Who do we "apply" to?
 
I've installed the Netgear version of this product at a few clients and it works pretty well provided all the plugs are supplied from the same phase - i.e. there is not transformer between them. Netgear has an interesting option whereby one can have a wireless accesspoint version of the connector at the remote position.

As to surges, yes the devices are designed to withstand some powerline noise, but a very large spike will penetrate anything.

As to connection between neighbours, AFAIK, the green distribution box will have a transformer for each house and transformers eat the high frequency data signal because they are designed to do that - they are designed to be most efficient at 50Hz, and they are also designed to block noise, which is anything other than 50Hz.

One thing that does produce a degradation in signal quality is having a Christmas tree of trouble adaptors. They don't like these.
 
This has really been around for a long time now, Adapters are pretty expensive though.

Just search for powerline or check out the networking section. one needs atleast 2 to operate and the 200mbps ones are around R1300 each.

* HomePlug 1.0 — Released June 2001 — Specification for connecting devices via power lines in the home. Theoretical speed of 14 Mbit/s.
* HomePlug 1.0 Turbo — Faster, unofficial specification for connecting devices via power lines in the home. Theoretical speed of 85 Mbit/s.
* HomePlug AV — Released December 2005 — Designed for transmitting HDTV and VoIP around the home. Theoretical PHY datarate of up to 189 Mbit/s.[1]
* HomePlug Access BPL (BPL) — under development — A working group to develop a specification for to-the-home connection.
* HomePlug Command & Control (HPCC) — Released October 9, 2007 — It's a low-speed, very low-cost technology intended to complement the alliance's higher-speed powerline communications technologies. The specification enable advanced, whole-house control of lighting, appliances, climate control, security and other devices.
 
Look carefully before you jump - credit card in hand

Anyone know if:

all plugs must be on same circuit breaker (we have plugs on different circuits)
additionally, what about different db boards in the home?

I have tried a similar setup last year from Netgear - mostly the technology is all promises and very little delivery if you are trying to connect devices that are not on the same circuit breaker - same dB board doesn't hack it.
Google for some of the complaints on these systems, you will find many
 
ppl stop asking if this thing will survive a powersurge!! Its the first thing you thought of dont you think it'll be the first thing the developer thought of to? Or are you somehow smarter?
If I am of average intelligence and the designers' IQ has a standard distribution then I am by definition "smarter" than 50% of the designers.

You will find, that even surge protection plugs (Where, I can assure you the designers thought of surges;)) only sporadically protect electronic equipment.
