Electricity thief kingpin arrested

Really?

Give these muppets bail for something like this, in times like these when every KW counts?!?! :wtf:

People involved in electricity theft of any sort at the moment should be dealt with incredibly harshly.... if not charged with some form of economic terrorism (if such a thing exists here)

Ghost vending?

Did they crack the code generator? I always thought that would be easy ... get your hands on a PC that generates codes (steal or go work for a 7-11), copy the DLL's (or whatever components), reverse engineer or crack them.

Would think that a central processor contains the algorithm and creates the token; all that the client side does is send and receive the request.

Perhaps. Some systems may have an offline mode.

Would probably be a web service call.. not in a component. (If someone steals the pc/hack the code, you don't want to be stuffed)

edit: If they did do it with stolen pcs, then wtf was Eskom thinking..

It's a bit more complicated than that. Your meter number including time/date of purchase and the municipality code you fall under is all part of the validation done on the meter for the code to work

Great! Now how about all those easy to trace illegal connections all over the country?

Eskom uses a system called xmlvend, I would assume all transactions are logged, the person would have to be quite high up to have access to both delete transactions and remove the audit logs.

I read the title to this thread and my first thaught was: "they arrested the CEO of Eskom????"

Found the kingpin.

Surely the suspects represent a flight risk and/or being taken out by the people above them? And they let them out on 50k bail? :wtf:
