Electricity Usage

720 kWh for a family home of 4 adults.

Usage for one person should be in the range of about 350 - 400 kWh.
Nope, I used about 550kwh when I lived alone. 4 bedroom with pool and normal electric geyser, aircon

Ok so I've stopped home quick and checked ... my idle (ie no lights or me physically using anything) is 0.5kWh.

If I turn off both PCs and my amp, that goes to between 0.2kWh and 0.3kWh, so I think just there I can saved 50% of my power. As for the thermostat, I have no idea it's set on currently or if it switches off (or if it is on now)

Dolby, your geyser element could easily be 1,5 kW. Maybe even 3 kW. It does not look like your geyser is heating up at the moment.

Ok great - so seems I've worked out the issue then - power settings on PC and turn off the amp.

Dolby, what you say seems to make sense. But I’m not so sure. The culprit is always things that heat up, especially geysers and heaters that run for hours. You don’t cook. I have my powerful 750 Watt desktop PC running 16 hours a day, no problem, the graphics card is idle most of the time. No … I think it's your geyser.

I find gaming uses a lot.

I installed a pilot light at a point where I could easily see when the geyser is on.

The geyser is still the item to check on. See what the setting is and make sure the thermostat is working as it should.

Just to update :

Almost 30% down from July, just from being more aware.

Granted, getting warmer so I din't use the hater as much - but also put both PCs on power saver and turned off my amplifier.

I reckon August is going to be the best month actually

Hi Dolby, well done! But you're still too high. For a single person who doesn't cook, you must get under 400 kWh a month, even during winter, even in July. Check your geyser.

I'll have to check the geyser ... as I can't see much else.

Aside from small appliances on standby, can't think of much else running barring a fridge and deep freeze.

Though, it wasn't exactly a full month 'saving' as the first week of July was still my old ways with PC / amps etc. I think August will be a far more true representation

Fridge and freezer uses a lot of power ... most after the geyser.

200w x 24h = 4.8Kwh per day
144Kwh per month

Running both is almost 300Kwh per month, that's almost 1/2 your consumption.

Will the fridge and freezer run at constant 200w though?

About R400-500 max per month:

2 adults with gaming pcs, average sized house, very little cooking, power efficient fridge/freezer, no heaters ever used.

Power draw is mainly:
Geyser 5-6am
Dishwasher (Surprisingly high usage)
Washing machine
PCs while gaming
Fridge

At night:
Fridge
LED spotlights are on all around the house the entire night
PVR & Cameras, Router & Wifi Router + gigabit switch.
