and thanks for posting that

worse case i probably will, but if someones willing - why not (job creation lol)

Go get a cable from a flea market. Just be careful with the commands (double check what you type) else you could bork it.

I haven't looked at your Youtube links (Youtube links relating to people's DIY attempts at HDD repair scare me) but what model is your drive?

Is it a 7200.11 firmware version SD15? Check the drive label. If so then it's a common problem and easily solved.

Let me also add that the fix to the issue I'm talking about (7200.11 f/w SD15 not detected in BIOS) only applies to that exact problem. Applying that fix to a different problem can/will destroy your drive.

have the exact same issue. ie Not picking up in Bios, same model number too.

Will try to visit the local cellphone store for that cable, then give it a try.

OK then there's a very good chance that it's the BSY bug. Google "7200.11 BSY" and you'll see it well documented.
Remember: Make a mistake when entering the commands, even one mistake, and you could brick your drive.

The cheapest source for the CA-42 cable is probably Dealextreme (~$4). There is also a seller on Bidorbuy that might be able to help - NaazT (www.techxpress.co.za) - his current stock seems to be selling for R250 though! If you decide to send it down South make sure to use a very reliable courier service. The last parcel that I received from the SAPO had water damage and definite signs of being dragged across the floor.

If you want to can send it to me, I'll do it free of charge if you are willing to cover postage.

Give the man a Bells!

EDIT: I have a cable that, although is not a CA42 cable, it works hundreds. It has resurrected around 20 drives over the last 2 years. It is in a box somewhere ( I have just moved ) and I will look for it. I got it from South_Bit as a matter of fact.

When I find it, I can send it to you as long as you guarantee to return it when done. It is a boomerang cable... goes to save a drive then comes all the way back until needed again.

Glad to hear it's still being used :)

WIN!

i'll ship it, cover postage and if you'd like send you a gift of sorts from our autostyle.co.za store (scale model car or similar)

Actually going to be in CPT later this week, maybe i can come to your offices?

lol, and risk the cape flats gangsters kill you for it? No man, dont want that on my conscience :)

PM Replied. Gracias!!

wow. Beyond impressed. There really are some awesome folks on the myBB forums :)

huge hat tip to Nick from SouthBit data recovery. He graciously offered to un-brick my seagate drive at no cost. I couriered the drive and collected it from him. Unfortunately he was away but i can safely say the drive is alive and kicking. Data all backed up and working like normal :)

Paid him back with a little model car :)
