Electronics without radio frequency modules must have EMC CoC - ICASA

so all those Chinese goods you get in flea markets are suddenly going to have to go get certified?
and that will happen when? before or after TV licenses get enforced?

So how's this going to affect imports of electronics and similar goods? Will you guys get your kindles stopped by SARS when ARAMEX tries to bring them in, asking for certificates of compliance?
Yes.

Yes you will.

Although I suspect Amazon will have FCC certification and other certification for the Kindle, which you'll then need to request (often docs can be found at the FCC site). Then you'll need to check if the EMC test done was done by an ILAC certified lab, then provide that certification.

This is purely a money grab, as Customs loves to seize stuff to sit on it for weeks accruing costs.

We already have issues with importing stuff that just utilize Wifi, now pretty much anything electrical needing a certification?
Heh,right

Can you imagine the amount of goods that customs will be confiscating now. All those items will be taken home as 'gifts'

May as well just send them straight to Customs rather than wasting time trying to get them sent to you.

Also, we need to create a market for Fake Electonic items.

Fake Samsung and LG, and Hitachi etc. devices - nice and lucrative ...

Something else to be smuggled.

Questions to ask:
1) SANAS is the only ACCREDITOR in South Africa by the Accreditation Act, and afiliated with the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation, the International Accreditation Forum, and many other international and African expert and trade entities.
1.1) This new EMF legislation provides for SABS to be an accreditor through some word play of the Standards Act, but the SABS is only the custodian and promoter of standards as depicted by the spirit of the same act. SABS are not empowered to make or set standards, nor laws, as the former is done via standard committees from industry - consisting of experts not from SABS, and the latter is done by government who, independant from SABS, take such standards and write compliance to the standard (not SABS) into law.
2.1) ACCREDITATION implies evaluation of systems, as well as comptence of an entity, so is the A-lab scheme accreditation? It seems so:
2.2) If the A-lab scheme (the scheme itself, not the labs that partake in it) is not accredited under SANAS, it must not, by definition, be recognised in South African law, as the scheme is not approved by the minister of trade, who delegated this power to SANAS.
3) There is a program (ZAF220_EN_2_1.PDF) denoted on the SABS website, of how a LAB can apply to be approved (or maybe accredited) by SABS under the A-lab scheme, where the LAB's comptence seem to be evaluated by the SABS. Competence certainly imply accreditation.
3.1) Who at SABS has the skills and knowledge to evaluate EMF laboratories? What qualifies this person to do so?
3.2) It is known that the SABS has limited technical expertees, as their role is that of the librarian looking after all the standards, not writing, policing, or enforcing the implementation there-of.
4) There are exorbitant fees charged for LABs to be authorised by the SABS - like R100,000 just to contemplate a lab's application.

SABS is struggling for funds. This A-lab program and the corresponding legality, seems to be that only - a fund raising program.

I guess I'm a felon since just now I received an old TASCAM tape deck via courier from the UK.

I somehow doubt SARS will stop any single consignments.

As for requesting something, it's obvious you have never dealt with Amazon customer support.

As far as aware this only applies if the product(s) will be used for commercial purposes or industrial equipment, additionally certain equipment or machinery already comes with compliance certificates, and generally you can request such certificate directly from the manufacture if needed, and be presented on request. This is usually requested during the clearance process at sars. For average joe it is business as usual.

The other guy says you're wrong.

Doesn't matter.

They're not looking for the odd item, they're looking for more volume. For your TASCAM tape deck, its a personal import, they'll just stick duties on top if your particularly unlucky.

Once you have an importers number (which you are required to have if you bring in more than a few items a year), customs can and will stop goods and demand to see licences.

SARS does stop consignments.

It's obvious you've never had to deal with them. Luckily.

Curious question, do you know, who runs and operates South African customs ? It is called SARS customs, it is a division of SARS, so whether you call it sars or customs it is one and the same department. It's obvious you don't know who does what in south africa.

If you read carefully, you'll see I call it customs.
I'm aware customs is part of SARS.

If you look a bit further, you'll see I was requoting Mirai. Hence my specific use in that manner.

Mirai - "I somehow doubt SARS will stop any single consignments."

Me - "SARS does stop consignments."

How about reading a bit more carefully before you critique. Hmm?
