I'm aware customs is part of SARS.

If you look a bit further, you'll see I was requoting Mirai. Hence my specific use in that manner.

Let's see now. What we are going to have to do is have all our electrical installations at our residences re-COCd including every circuit breaker, isolator and RCD in our DBs. Those of us who have solar power and inverters will have to submit them for COC. Any electric ovens, stoves, geysers, kettles, cloths irons, you name it. Your phone charger too. Start posting them to the SABS so long to get their COC issued. Next time you buy that nice new microwave oven, tell the shop where you bought it to send it to the SABS first before delivery. They can't even issue renewed drivers licenses anymore, now they want to pull this stunt!

Here is an idea. Those of us who know and understand electrical/electronics should send SABS all the little cheap jellybean electronic or electrical components that we can find. I am going to send them some LM78 series voltage regulators, LM723, LM2930. How about an NE555 oscillator, damn that must create a little bit of RF at a high enough frequency, not that it can do very high frequency. How about a few op-amps too? You can get those to generate a perfect sine wave that can transmit quite far. How about a few transistors too? I have PLENTY of electronic components in my arsenal to keep them testing for another decade! What are they going to do? They asked for it. Let's give it to them!

I don't think you quite understand what they do.
SABS generates standards, regulations, process compliance (ie. auditing for ISOxxx) and accredits labs they (mostly) don't do testing.


Sending them stuff to test is pointless - they'll tell you to go to a test laboratory for testing (if they even bother to reply).

This is aimed at imported goods coming in too.

You won't need this unless you're importing product to South Africa (or one of the few factories manufacturing here, as opposed to assembly.)

Curious question, do you know, who runs and operates South African customs ? It is called SARS customs, it is a division of SARS, so whether you call it sars or customs it is one and the same department. It's obvious you don't know who does what in south africa.

Customs only deals with taxation and in some cases excise duties and contraband as they are the first port of stop. Then you have your port authorities which in the case of airports is managed by ACSA. It's their duty to report to the other authorities under who's jurisdiction it falls if they suspect something isn't compliant. For medicines and related substances this is SAHPRA (used to be the MCC), communications equipment is ICASA and general standards compliance is SABS.

So no, not everything is stopped by SARS and in some cases goods get handed over to other authorities for compliance.
