Can anyone remember how to set these things into learning mode?
I have tried all combinations of keys -driving me mad!

Ellies can't remember themselves - 15 years ago.

I know they can clone a '91 Kombi/golf/jetta conlog remote.

Hah!
To answer my own question for what it's worth and anyone that googled this:
Worked perfectly on my dad's jetta ii and my microbus.

Hold down buttons 1&2 simultaneously for 2 seconds, the LED will just glow.
Let go and do same thing again for about 10 seconds. The LED will do a double flash and then another double flash and go off.

Now you in cloning mode.
Pick the number/button you want to program and hold it down. LED will be flashing. If not you done it wrong. Start again. It must flash, not a steady light.

Now hold the remote you want to clone about 1cm away and hold it's button in so it is transmitting. The LED will gradually flash slower and slower until it is a steady light. After steady light for a second or two let go for about 10 seconds

Push buttons 1&2 simultaneously again for 2 or 3 seconds and you're done.

These are old golf 2 /jetta ii and microbus conlog alarm immobilizers that use a fixed code - won't work with the 3's or anything with a rolling / hopping code.

[EDIT] My Jetta MK2 and 91 Microbus are on 409Mhz so it works. This guy says his is on 315Mhz.
