Hi,

I'm in the process of starting a business and would like to register a web domain and have a business email. I'm kind of clueless where to start in terms of registering the domain. I would also like to use Gmail business so its linked to my personal email. While searching I see there are providers that charge a monthly fee for email and web hosting. Right now I just want to secure the web domain as I'm not ready to launch a website but would like email to be functional. where do i start? thanks in advance.

You need hosting to have email from the web host. Since you're going to use Gmail, register the domain and setup your Gmail.

Any ideas on the best providers to go with for small business? Are there monthly or once off fees?

.co.za
and does an email come with it?

If you take web hosting as part of the domain registration.

Everything is separate.

You can use a separate company to register your domain.
Another for hosting.
And in your case, Google for email.

Excuse my ignorance, tried to find all the info I could but couldn't get clarity so apologies for the many questions.
- When I register a domain, will I get an email with it which i can then use with Gmail?

Try Imaginet or Hertzner, when you register a domain, you have the option to include mail.

No you need to set that up with Google.
So you can have things like
[email protected]
[email protected]
I think Google charges $5 per a user.

Alternatively you can take hosting with the company doing your domain registration and setup email there and just forward incoming mail to your current email address whatever that is.

Go to a site like domains.co.za
Register a .co.za domain (yearly cost)
Get some hosting space - this is where your e-mail and website files reside (monthly cost)

Then go into the cpanel account, they will e-mail you all the details and you can create e-mail addresses from there. If you need help you can PM me.

I use Gmail Business for my company. I wasn't the one who set it up back in the day so unsure of the exact details, all I know is we are on a free plan. They do however say it's a legacy plan and constantly want us to upgrade to the new $5 per user per month plan, so I doubt they still offer the free plan. They will probably force us at some point, but till then all it costs me is $10 per year for my domain. At a point we had 14 users each with their own 15 GB of Google Drive and mail storage, all for free.

The domain had to be set up threw Google and is with Go Daddy, as far as I know it can't be moved away from Google, as said it costs $10 per year.

My other domains and hosting for the business website is with Hetzner, I have the .com domain with Google, then also a .co.za domain with Hetzner, both pointing to the same website.

Get the domain from domains.co.za. Then when you are ready get a normal cpanel account from them.

Then pm me and I will setup a mail forwarder for you so the mail goes to your personal account.

For free (:

I recommend www.webstrategies.co.za. You can purchase a .co.za domain for R75 per year. Regarding email hosting, you can get that from Gmail for business or you can take up hosting with Webstrategies from R40 per month I believe.

I see they do not have a Acceptable Use, Terms, Conditions, and Privacy Policies. If the network is hosted on the same HSP as the site is (EliteHost, in which case it is a reseller), then it's a good thing from a performance and uptime view-point.

webhosters.co.za also not bad. It is affordable and their support is great!

Much like my last reply.

Why do resellers not have policies in place? Or, if they do, why are they not public?

And their website is incomplete; missing links all over the show. And they do website design? :|
