At work, our domain is hosted by mweb, hence an mweb email account (but not ***@mweb.co.za). My home ISP is openweb. When I change the work router to use my home ISP, any email I send is not received but is returned with

550 relaying is not permitted (196.***.**.**).
Why?

Any help?

You need to use openweb's smtp server settings I think. Give MrBeep a shout.

You must always use the SMTP server of the ISP you are currently connected to. ISPs do not permit the sending of mail from machines outside of their network - that is "relaying". It is an anti-spammer measure - imagine if spammers could just send via any old SMTP server how much worse spam would be.

Under your Outlook SMTP server settings, choose one of the ISPs and enter your username/password under "my outgoing server requires authentication" for that ISP.

Rwenzori - That is true. But to get around this problem you authenticate with the outgoing mail server, as described above.

When you are using your OpenWeb account you need to use the following SMTP server:
smtp.openweb.co.za (196.26.208.190)
It does not require authentication.

When you're using your MWEB account you need to use their SMTP server (which I assume is smtp.mweb.co.za).

If you use Thunderbird as your email client, you can create both these servers under the SMTP tab and simply change the default one according to which ADSL account you are logged in under.

I have a similar problem since I am travelling and working at many organisations. My ISP suggested that I use a small freeware utility called Autoroute SMTP. This has simplified my life tremendously, since all I need to do is pick the relevant SMTP server for my location, before sending mail. (It seems that the utility could also do this automatically, based on IP ranges, but I have not bothered setting that up yet)

I now have only one SMTP account(local host) and this utility routes it to the correct ISP server.

Separate accounts for the various SMTP servers are fine, but I found it a pain when replying to messages.

If you need help PM me and then I can mail you the utility if needed.

:) Ta very much Franna. Works like a charm. I'm grateful!

Thanks all. I'll be trying out some of the other suggestions also.
