Is there a way to set an email client like Thunderbird to download incoming emails constantly without having to set it to receive emails every couple of minutes?

Browser based email will be quicker, but for a popping client like Tbird I do not think it's possible.

have gmail and have set it up through thunderbird, i was just wondering if it were possible to set it in the way gmail always refreshes.

Why on earth would you want that functionality, if I may ask? One minute intervals are'nt quick enough?

Get an old PC box and load Linux onto it, load up a free package called Zimbra and play around with your email to your hearts content

IMAP is constantly connected AFAIK, so just use IMAP with Thunderbird.
