Hi all,

My wife is starting a little business from home, and wants to have an email address which is in the format [email protected]

To get this kind of email address, what are her options? Does she need to register the domain name first, or can it be hosted or how does it work? I am really uninformed when it comes to this aspect...

Also, what costs are involved?

Many thanks, Rudi

PS Admins forgive me if this is the wrong forum...

You need to get two things: a domain name and a hosted site. You don't need to use the webspace, but it's needed for the domain name. Take a look at www.webafrica.co.za.
http://www.webafrica.co.za/webhosting/linux/personal/.
It will be perfect for your needs. The domain name costs R65 per year (if done through your host) and the hosting is R18 per month for the cheaper option (more than enough).

Well, for her to have the "businessname" part after her alias, she should register the "businessname" domain first. Obviously, the more generic, the better the chances that its already taken... Costs involved could range from yearly domain renewal only, to domain renewal + mail host + website host + etc... It all depends on what she wants. I'm sure one of the host representatives here on the board could give you more info. The average cost(s) for my (website) clients are about R50 - R80 a month for hosting and email, plus a further R100 odd rand a year for domain renewal.

EDIT: frooty fingers first it seems... :p

the quickest and cheapest way of doing this is via google apps (R100 p/a). they do all of the setup for you and give you the whole gmail system (email [7gb], docs and site). PM me for details.

^ what he said

You Google Apps is by far the simplest, http://www.google.com/a you will need to setup DNS servers first, I recomend https://www.editdns.net free and they also have Google templates which makes your life very easy.

Procedure is as follows :

1) Goto http://co.za and do a lookup for the name you are wanting, to make sure its not taken

2) Create an account for yourself at https://www.editdns.net then add your domain to ie businessname.co.za then gointo it and add the Google Apps template. make a note of the Nameservers

3) Wait 4 hours for the name servers to properly replicate

4) Goto http://co.za and follow the registration procedure if all is done correctly you should get an email back confirming its been created as well as an invoice.

5) Goto http://www.google.com/a click on standard and create your account there with your domain name, and work your way thru and verify follow the cname method.

Thats it you can have this up and running within a few hours if you do it properly.

PM me if you need help!

Yup Google Apps standard is free for up to 50 users, each user gets 7+gig mailbox size with POP3s / IMAPs and SMTP access.

The only thing you have to pay for is the annual R50 domain registration fee for your co.za domain.

This is amazing, I am actually quite proud of myself. With the help and clear, concise instructions of Warwickw I managed to register the domain, set up editDNS, Google Apps and configure Outlook 2007 with the new domain.

This might be funny to hardcore IT dudes, but for me (an engineer) it is quite an achievement! Thank you very much Warwick!

Now I need to get a copy of Frontpage, so we can start with the designing of a web page. Any pointers, instructions or tips that I can use?

Cheers Rudi

Yeah: Don't use FrontPage. :p

Sorry - it's an ongoing joke. FrontPage used to create horrible code and proprietary scripts - these days it's not too bad.

Thanks for the links. Anything along the "free" lines that I can try before parting with $30 or 60 pounds.

Remember I am a noob at this and want to give this a try. If I suck at this I will have to ask a pro to do the design for me...:)

Yeah, there are a few. Try KompoZer for starters - it's open source, and built on the Gecko engine. Not bad for beginners. To get more professional you will probably end up actually writing code - in which case there is a plethora of editors you can use.
