Email help please...

you need to change your smtp server settings for outgoing mail. for cellc it's mail.cmobile.co.za

or you can set the outgoing mail to your provider & set it to ask for authentication. Then you can send mail using whatever & it won't be a problem. It just takes slightly longer to make its way through the net(often not noticed).

Edit:

here's where to set that:

further edit

using that I have read my email on friends' home networks & even on my folks network in the UK

Thanks guys - knew it was something easy/stupid

Tested and works 100

use smtp.uls.co.za as your outgoing server. It dynamically changes depending on where (how) you access the internet. Apparently CellC's SMTP server is not the greatest though.

@Venomous - thanks, tried it but doesn't want to work, will retry shortly.

@T-Man - thanks, it works with both without changing anything. One question - what are risk/consequences to changing it to smtp.uls.co.za? Should there be delays? I know emails aren't the safest - would I be exposed to any more risk than just using telkom's / cell c's smtp?

Yip, you are exposed if you route your outgoing mail to the third-party smtp server. They can read your mail, no question about.

I just saw you can also use: smtp.saix.net Would that be the same as using telkom or not? I tried it and it works with both connection but again, assume they can read it...

EDIT: but guess in the same light, using telkom, they can also read your emails or MWeb etc etc...

Of course they can read everything, including crocks in the govt (using communication interception act). There is also Echelon which allows local and foreign goverments to spy your personal or business communication.
If you are concern to that level, you need VPN connection to the destignation and exchange keys by the courier. And many many more....

If you're on Telkom (8ta) smtp.uls.co.za points to smtp.saix.net.
If you're on CellC smtp.uls.co.za points to mail.cmobile.co.za.
MAGIC!!.

It works for a couple of other providers as well. See this link.

It looks like it works resolving DNS differently - based on your IP address.
Code:
C:\tracert smtp.uls.co.za

Tracing route to smtp.vodacom.co.za [196.11.146.149]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1 359 ms 319 ms 459 ms 10.17.7.12
  2 * * * Request timed out.
  3 * * * Request timed out.
  4 * * * Request timed out.
  5 * * * Request timed out.
  6 346 ms 439 ms 509 ms 196.11.146.149

Trace complete.

Thanks T-Man, will use it then.
Be aware that when your ISP smtp server is down you can still use SMTP server from your mail provider using authentication option, as adviced above.
