hi,

so am looking into a windows or linux webserver to provide my users with a email account.

I would like to have API accsess for my system to create accounts. there must be web accsess to a nice mail box. easy to setup and exapand if needed.

MS exchange is out of the question

open source is good, or commercial but not overly expensive.

any suggestions

You REALLY do not want to have to maintain a mailserver and try and keep out spam.

only issue with google apps standard is that it works best via imap (push)
unfortunately outlook sucks donkey balls with imap. well, anything < outlook 2010.
anybody using outlook 2010 with imap?
i guess if your clients are happy with pop, then it's not an issue.

Only problem i have with google mail is when you send to someone in your own domain you are actually sending out then back in again.

Try SquirelMail webmail.co.za used to use it they just customized the front end

thanks guys, after considering the aspects of mail server management, i think i am going to outsource, to google or some other guys. and just intergrate with thier API. Email server management looks like something i would rather avoid.

How about MailEnable for windows? They have a free version that comes with webmail, the works. Used to use that before I switched to google apps.

Exim + Dovecot very reliable, very stable, very scalable, free and open source. For a simple and easy to use web interface you can use Postfix.Admin I think webmin might even have an Exim module as well.

Add spamassassin +clamav and you have very scalable solution that can do virus scanning and handle spam very effectively if configured correctly.
