Email war: Google Gmail versus Microsoft

Gmail is just better than anything out there.

That ms video about gmail failed to mention that all they really want is to replace the gmail man with the hotmailman.

Er... One teeny tiny little thing. They're comparing Gmail (webmail) with Office (a client). It would be more accurate to compare Gmail with Hotmail which would entirely speak for itself (BWAHAHAHAHA!).

Also, Gmail supports IMAP and POP, so you're entirely able to use whatever client (Thunderbird, Office, whatever) you feel like.

Gmail is also linked with Google Calendar, Docs, iGoogle, Google+ and all the other I Can't Live Without It stuff Google is pretty much renowned for.

Oh well, nothing new seeing Microsoft misrepresent the facts.

The article fails to mention that Microsoft's video is not part of a public campaign, but was apparently shown at the Microsoft Global Exchange sales conference. I don't think Microsoft will use a video like this as part of a public campaign.

Microsoft managed to keep its 12,000 or so attendees of its annual Microsoft Global Exchange sales conference from tweeting and blogging company secrets last week. But at least one enterprising attendee managed to grab one of those infamous sales videos that the company loves to show at these events.

On July 20 during the MGX opening sessions, the Softies showed off their “Gmail Man” spoof, meant to spur the troops selling Office 365 against Google Apps, and specifically, Gmail. In the video, Gmail man riffles through mail to find keywords for serving up ads. The message: Google cares more about advertising revenues than privacy.

But you know this is what they will say in a sales pitch for corporate packages. Why else would they show it at a sales conference?

Microsoft reminds me of the ANC- they latch onto and make big deals out of non issue. Rather spend that time improving your services, fools.

I absolutely agree, this video is an exaggeration which take advantage of people's ignorance in an attempt to discredit Google. But Microsoft never used this video as part of a public campaign like the article suggests. I get the impression that it somehow leaked.

No offense but maybe check your facts. Office 365 is a web based service with MS Office online and can do what Google Docs do and more, a lot more.

What MS is taking a dig at is Google Analyzing people's data and mail to for targeted advertising...

Rather pay for an email service and no it is clean and not hosted in another country subject to their laws, like the US Patriot Act!

On purpose and thus becoming a planned public campaign?

Oh, I see :o

Sorry for my thick-headed misunderstanding. I was under the impression it was another MS Office Outlook client.

But wow... now it makes even less sense O.o'

A professional cloud service aimed at mid-size businesses and enterprises feels threatened by a freely available e-mail service???

I really am shocked at all the hate that MS still receives - even without any actual knowledge (yes I'm looking at you Lycanthrope).
Seriously, do you even realise that companies change over time?
Have you used SkyDrive to sync your files automagically between all your pc's and to store you pictures/docs/etc?
Have you used Office365 (the exchange part) and Office Web Apps?
No? Well then go try them all. Then you can bitch after that.

very good point. Disappointed that the article is so misleading.

BTW I use gamil because it ties into all my other google services. Just doesnt make sense to use hotmail or ymail for that matter.

Maybe there are some concerns wrt Google ...

It seems like lots of people have been tossed out of Googleville on their keisters lately. Many found themselves the victim of Google+’s silly name policies, which frown on pseudonyms or nicknames. Some got bounced for other reasons.

But no expulsion from Google was quite so dramatic or potentially disastrous as the one experienced by NYC artist Dylan Marcheschi, whose plight – which he publicized under the Twitter pseudonym “@ThomasMonopoly” – went viral last week.

Why they did it is immaterial, the fact that they can is the problem. To me this is worrying, irrespective of Google's spin doctoring and backtracking.

Have they really? Because im looking at this video and it seems to me that they are up to their old trick again. They using misinformation and fear-mongering to turn people away from their competition.
For me it was never about their product as much as it was their complete lack of ethics.

Er... Excuse me? I misunderstood Microsoft's product since I assumed that it was somehow related to Gmail (otherwise why finance an entire ad campaign purporting to be better than it?) The fact of the matter is that it's comparing oranges with apples. Something which is readily evidenced in me falling for the comparison.

Seriously, do you even realise that companies change over time?
It hasn't. Ave said it best and I agree--they have a complete lack of ethics.

What do they stand to gain by misrepresenting Gmail? They're not attacking the product, they're attacking the brand and failing miserably at even that.

As I said, I apologise for assuming (thanks to the ad, no less) that the new Office product was somehow related to webmail or even marketed to the average Joe.
