Hi everyone.

I`m trying to find a mobile phone for kids with tracking and monitoring features.
I came across something like this a while back in the UK but I can`t seem to find anything similar in SA. It`s a mobile phone that looks like a toy, in this case it looked like a teddy bear. It specifically made for kids, has no screen and only a few buttons (not the normal 0-9 found on phones), not too sure how that works...

Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where I may find something of this sort?

Hi HavocXphere, does their service work with any mobile phone or only specific models?
Do they have these "toy" phones with monitoring features? If so, please give me more info as to where I may purchase these phones.

It works with any phone, its called Look4Me.
 
Thank for the info Buddha, looks like a great option. I don`t see any price though :-S
I came across a site today that has something similar for R699,00. It`s called the Teddyphone, does anyone know if this phone is any good? The price seems ok and the features as well.

Any insight will be appreciated.
 
I don't think Vodacom/MTN cater for these "special" phones. i.e. chances are good that any features it has that are not on a normal phone are not going to work.

Look4me is a couple of rand per month (R10?)...dunno the exact price.
 
Agree... The site I saw for this teddyphone says that their phone has a tracking option, but not yet available in South Africa. Besides that, I`m quite interested in it and my wife also liked the whole design/features. Problem is, will my daughter...lol. She looked at the pic and asked "how can this be a phone if it doesn`t have 1,2,3....
 
There are a number of local companies offering "personal tracking" products. Some allow outdial, others just indial, others just do tracking.
I have personal experience of http://www.laipacafrica.co.za/ and http://www.sportstrack.net/
The Laipac personal locator works well, it's probably the closest fit to your requirements.
There is of course Netstar's Guardian, http://guardian.netstaronline.net/whatis.aspx, don't know much about it.
Vodacom4Me is not a serious tracking solution, no GPS, no accuracy.

Thanks for the info @Kaasp. The tracking idea is great, but not exactly what I am looking for. Have a look at www.teddyphone.co.za and let me know what you think of this phone. It has a few great features, one which interests me quite a lot is the fact that there is a cost control. My daughter will only be able to call up to 4 number that we pre-program into the system (not too sure how that works yet). Let me know your thoughts.
 
actually they do have that phone; they sell ita at Makro on a cell c or vodacom contract i think!!
 
Seems like a pretty cool concept at a reasonable price.
Of course assuming you'd use a prepaid sim, you'd have the problem of ensuring your kid had enough airtime to call you if need be. Might be an idea to program the buttons for sending "please call me's".
Reading the FAQ, not clear if inbound calls are possible, also where's the battery life indicator?
 
@Kaasp, I sent them an email asking all these questions. They replied saying that the phone accepts calls (has built-in mic/earphone), hence the take and reject buttons. It also has external earphones, charger, battery and manual included. Regarding the battery life, the phone actually send the parents (or whom ever it is programmed to send the sms to) a sms message alerting them that the battery is low, damn that`s a great idea! Regarding the "call me`s", they say it cant be done :-S, pitty though.
 
PS: going to check if I find anyone on the net complaining about this phone (any problems etc..). If not, I`ll be ordering one tomorrow.
 
Hi Pooky, thanks for the info but I actually placed an order through the teddyphone website, they charged me R699 + R30 for postage. Just waiting to receive it, hopefully soon. Will update as soon as I receive it.
 
Finally we got the teddyphone and boy does it come with a complete manual (unlike those cheap chinese products with 2 A5 pages....). Have figured out most of the features/functions, the overall quality also seems to be quite good. I`ll test it thoroughly and leave my "updates" here.
