Employment situation desperate

You obviously have not seen the unemployed in the UK. Except in their case they have for decades received very nice support from the government.

Personally I can understand why crime it through the roof - with that amount of unemployed people "hanging around" all day its just a matter of time... And with the "Entitlement" mentally I can also understand why a lot of people would rather fall back on grants than actually upskilling and finding work...

No you can't compare because in the UK you can live quite well on welfare. Easy to talk about improving your skills and finding work. That is extremely difficult to achieve. You can train as much as you like, but that does not give you experience, so you'll back of the queue. And there are a lot of people out there who are not giving up easily. But can I really blame them when after months or even years of going from interview to interview, trying every possible way to get some sort of employment (including attempts to be self-employed) without success that they ultimately give up? So I question, in the absence of evidence, that this has anything to do with an alleged entitlement mentality.

There but for the Grace of God .... we can be so thankful every single day that we had the privilege of an education and that we have jobs that provide a decent income.

I think many unemployed might find that term trite and even offensive. Unless this article is suggesting people are giving up their employment just to go on welfare?

Agreed - when Affirmative Action was instituted the whites started small business and bed and breakfasts etc. Mostly the labourers just stand on street corners waiting for a possible opportunity to get a piece job. There must be a million opportunities that they could exploit in the townships. I think we need to change the mindset and the only way we can do that is by introducing entrepreneurship at school level. Isn't it ironic? The paradox is we need to teach capitalistic entrepreneurship at school level to encourage people to start small businesses so that they can generate the income for government to impose their communist and socialist policies. Go figure?
 
@Goldenrule - Is fine with me if you are confused. However, don't confuse other fellow South Africans. Is bad enough as is bud :D. While I agree, not everyone has the same education level, talking to people the way you just did is a big no go where I come from. But then again - this is Africa. When I came to your country a few weeks ago I was full of expectations. It did not take much to see what is going on. And no I am not a 'agent' yet (whatever that means) :D Actually nothing matters (for me at least), as long as we win this afternoon in Capetown.

Really? What I saw was a lot of bitching and moaning, and saying they'd have a job if it weren't for affirmative action and it's not their fault. Furthermore it is not hard to see that finding other ways to generate income is in no way restricted to whites. In fact I've noticed that we white people have quite the sense of entitlement. Must be the white way.

Isn't it ironic that we need these socialist policies to counterbalance the negative effects of capitalism?

Is these not the ones that are not actively searching for work? I know there are people left out of unemployment stats because they have lost hope and stopped looking for work?
 
The article does sound a bit as if suggesting that people give up employment by choice, for welfare. Nevertheless, it is a shocking situation.
Also, the article does not really give any opinion on job availability. Are we in a situation where people want to work, but there are no jobs, or is it a case of too many unskilled unemployed people? One would think that with an employment level of only 40%, that there would be a lot of job opportunities, but then on the flipside there are 15 million people looking for jobs. Which is it? Too little jobs, or just people not wanting to work?

I think the unskilled labour supply is too big. This country need qualified engineers, doctors and scientists, not more unqualified people that flood the casual job market. The only way to do something long term, is to increase the focus on quality education. Cutting corners in education is not going to help anybody long term.
 
Well the ANC strategy to beat the white man was to outbreed them, they forgot to push the stop button.
 
The solution to SA's unemployment problem is exactly the same as the one employed by the USA in the Great Depression: employ hundreds of thousands of people in civilian infrastructure projects. For example, our neglected roads that need R100 billion worth of maintenance...
